摘要
Stewart Brand(生于 1938 年 12 月 14 日,伊利诺伊州 Rockford)是 20-21 世纪美国最重要的"催化型公共知识分子"——一位生物学家、出版人、社区设计师、长期主义者。 按钮运动,催化了 NASA 公开太空地球图像的进程;1968 年创办 Whole Earth Catalog——Steve Jobs 后来称之为"纸面版的 Google";1971 年在巅峰时关闭目录并主持传奇的 Demise Party,把 2 万美元现金抛给宾客让他们决定如何使用;1984 年在第一届 Hackers Conference 上说出 "Information wants to be free, Information wants to be expensive.";1985 年与 Larry Brilliant 共同创办 The WELL(Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link),开创了"You Own Your Own Words"的实名网络社区设计原则;1987 年与 Peter Schwartz 等人共同创办 Global Business Network,把场景规划带入企业战略主流;1996 年与 Brian Eno、Danny Hillis 共同创办 Long Now Foundation 与 10,000 年钟,把"长期思考"制度化;2009 年的 Whole Earth Discipline 公开支持核能、转基因、地球工程,引发环保运动内部的"四大异端"争议;2012 年与妻子 Ryan Phelan 共同创办 Revive & Restore 推动猛犸象等灭绝物种的基因复活;2026 年 87 岁出版与 Stripe Press 合作的 Maintenance: Of Everything — Part One,把他的最后一个核心命题放在"维护"上。
We are as gods and might as well get good at it."(我们已是神,不如好好学着做神。)这句 1968 年的卷首语,在 2009 年被他自己改写为 "We are as gods and have to get good at it."(我们已是神,必须好好学着做神。)
Whole Earth: The Many Lives of Stewart Brand
"If you want to change the world, you give someone a tool and teach them how to use it.""
"Brand's mother was a voracious reader and a big advocate of humans in space.""Brand 的母亲是一个如饥似渴的阅读者,也是人类进入太空的强烈支持者。"John Markoff, New Books in STS, 2022
中学就读位于新罕布什尔州的 Phillips Exeter Academy(菲利普斯埃克塞特学院,美国顶级寄宿中学)。1956 年进入斯坦福大学,主修生物学,师从 Paul Ehrlich(后来《人口炸弹》的作者)。
"[Brand's military feedback technique]: (1) accurately observe and tell them what they're doing right, (2) name one — and only one — thing to improve, (3) tell them you'll be watching, (4) congratulate the improvement, then move to the next item.""(军方的反馈方法):(1)准确观察并告诉对方他们做得对的地方;(2)只点出一件——只能一件——需要改进的地方;(3)告诉他们你会盯着;(4)改进后表扬,然后再处理下一件。"Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Build a portfolio of skills before you know the goal; the goal appears once the pathway is built."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017(解释 Whole Earth Catalog 的诞生)
这是后来"build a pathway of capabilities and the goal appears"思维的早期版本。
"A photograph would do it — a color photograph from space of the earth."" Stewart Brand, sb.longnow.org, 自述
"Why haven't we seen a photograph of the whole Earth yet?""
"Dear boy, it's a charming notion but you must realize you can never see more than half the earth from any particular point in space.""
"His greatest achievement, by far, was the simple act of putting the photograph of the earth as seen from space on the Whole Earth Catalog's cover."" John Markoff(Markoff biography review)
1966 年同年他与 Lois Jennings(数学家,半 Odawa 印第安血统)结婚。
Whole Earth Catalog(1968–1972)
"We are as gods and might as well get good at it. So far, remotely done power and glory — as via government, big business, formal education, church — has succeeded to the point where gross defects obscure actual gains.""
Mother of All Demos
The Mother of All Demos"(万恶演示之母)——在旧金山秋季联合计算机大会上展示了鼠标、超文本、视频会议、协作编辑等今天仍在用的核心人机交互范式。
"He recognized that computing was the next big thing after psychedelics.""他认识到,计算是 psychedelics(迷幻药)之后的下一件大事。" New Books in STS, 2022
Demise Party
The Last Whole Earth Catalog
最后由 Fred Moore(一个早些时候烧掉一张美元钞票的人)拿走了约 1.5 万美元,回家由委员会分配。
Brand
"We are being tempted.""
"We've done our job — provided access to tools.""
"It's the job you always try to do, to put yourself out of business.""
"They're learning fast. As near as I can tell, that's what they're for."" Stewart Brand, The Demise Party, 1971-06-12
"Ready or not, computers are coming to the people. That's good news, maybe the best since psychedelics."" Stewart Brand, Rolling Stone, 1972-12-07
"Where a few brilliantly stupid computers can wreak havoc, a host of modest computers serving innumerable individual purposes can be healthful, can repair havoc, feed life."" Stewart Brand, Rolling Stone, 1972-12-07
Whole Earth Catalog(1971)
"I had essentially fallen into an asymptotic black hole of my own making... I was physically and mentally a wreck. Rather than selling the rights or handing it off, I wanted to see what would happen if I simply stopped a full-blown success. My hypothesis was that others would step into that market opportunity, which didn't happen, but naming the final edition 'The Last Whole Earth Catalog' turned out to be the most effective marketing device imaginable."" The Last Whole Earth Catalog',事后证明是你能想象到的最有效的营销手段。"Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
"Stay hungry. Stay foolish.""
"Stay Foolish... is a refreshment exercise to keep you from clinging to the past or a local optimum.""Stay Foolish……
"The only way you will get to those mountains is by being foolish, by trying weird stuff, and by being random. It gets you off the low hill of fitness to potentially a high mountain of fitness."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: 'Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.' It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you."" Stay Foolish.' Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. Steve Jobs, Stanford Commencement, 2005-06-12
"Capitalism with guardrails.""
"Brand has long-standing pro-capitalist sentiment and 'long-standing antipathy toward communism' but is NOT a neoliberal — believes in 'capitalism with guardrails.'... Markoff places Brand politically near Jerry Brown — a conservative who 'abhors the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal.""Brand John Markoff, New Books in STS, 2022
"Before working in the governor's office in Sacramento, I held a 'lazy libertarianism' that viewed government with suspicion... working in the state departments gave me a front-row seat to the 'deep state'—the career bureaucrats who do the actual work of running a society. I found that these people were high-quality, low-paid, and remarkably non-political. They were dedicated to keeping data on things like water flow for decades, regardless of who was in the governor's chair... The deep state, at least in California, is damn impressive and resilient."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
Hackers Conference
出席者:Steve Wozniak、Richard Stallman、Ted Nelson、John Draper(Captain Crunch)、Richard Greenblatt、Bob Wallace 等。
"On the one hand you have — the point you're making Woz — is that information sort of wants to be expensive because it is so valuable — the right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information almost wants to be free because the costs of getting it out is getting lower and lower all of the time. So you have these two things fighting against each other."" Stewart Brand, Hackers Conference, 1984-11
"Information wants to be free and it wants to be expensive. That relationship is not contradictory; it's paradoxical in the sense that the more the one, the more the other."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
Hackers Conference(1984)
- 结果:Hackers Conference 成了"hacker ethic"概念的孵化器,"information wants to be free / expensive"成为数字经济辩论的核心句式。
WELL, GBN(1985–1995)
The WELL
1985 年 2 月 Brand 与 Larry Brilliant(Seva Foundation 创始人)共同创办 The WELL(Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link)。
The WELL 的设计哲学是 "You Own Your Own Words"(YOYOW)——你拥有自己说过的话,也对它们负责。Brand 后来在 Long Now 与 Markoff 的对谈中解释这条原则的来源:是他在 EIES(Electronic Information Exchange System,70 年代)做的一次匿名实验:
"When you have anonymity, people can pretend to be other people. Within two days, it had gone completely sociopathic."" Stewart Brand, The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"You own your own words, you're responsible for your own words, and it's actually a real you, not a bot."" Stewart Brand, The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"Stewart made a brilliant marketing move by giving free accounts to influential technology writers like myself and Steven Levy, as well as to hackers.""Stewart 做了一个出色的市场操作——把免费账户送给像我和 Steven Levy 这样有影响力的科技作家,还有那些黑客们。"John Markoff, The Long Now Foundation, 2022
WELL 后来成了 Electronic Frontier Foundation(EFF)创始人 John Perry Barlow、John Gilmore、Mitch Kapor 的会面场所;AOL 的 Steve Case 和 Craigslist 的 Craig Newmark 都曾是 WELL 会员。
Global Business Network
Brand:
"THE ELECTRIC KOOL-AID MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT."" Kunkel, New Republic, 2022
How Buildings Learn
1994 年 Brand 出版 How Buildings Learn: What Happens After They're Built。
- Site(场地)— 永恒
- Structure(结构)— 30-300 年
- Skin(外皮)— 20 年
- Services(管线)— 7-15 年
- Stuff(物品)— 日/月
"A supply of simple, low-cost, easily modified buildings is key to innovation and economic growth."" Stewart Brand, How Buildings Learn, 1994
"A building is not something you finish; a building is something you start. It is an ongoing process in perpetual dialogue with its users."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
- 当时背景:80 年代中期反文化已经退潮(Brand 自己后来在 Rolling Stone 评价:"Communes failed, drugs went nowhere, free love led pretty directly to AIDS")。
第六章:Long Now 时代(1996–2008)
1996 年 1 月 4 日 Brand 与 Brian Eno、Danny Hillis 共同创办 The Long Now Foundation(早期董事还有 Kevin Kelly、Esther Dyson)。
"The Long Now"这个名字本身是 Brian Eno 的发明:
"Eno coined the phrase 'The Big Here and the Long Now' — both a personal philosophy and an art statement. The phrase came from Eno's experience of moving to NYC and feeling 'the Short Now' of the dominant culture.""Eno 创造了 'The Big Here and the Long Now' 这个短语——既是个人哲学,也是艺术宣言。 Long Now Foundation 资料
The Clock of the Long Now
- Commerce(商业)— 由市场竞争驱动
- Infrastructure(基础设施)— 道路、通讯、教育、科学
- Governance(治理)— 法律和政治系统
- Culture(文化)— 深层信念、语言、宗教
- Nature(自然)— 生态/气候过程
"Fast learns, slow remembers. Fast proposes, slow disposes. Fast is discontinuous, slow is continuous... Fast gets all our attention, slow has all the power."" Stewart Brand, The Clock of the Long Now, 1999
"The fast moving parts of civilization get all the attention, but the slow parts have all the power."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
Clock of the Long Now(万年钟)
SALT Seminars
Seminars About Long-term Thinking(SALT,长期思考研讨会)2003 年 11 月由 Eno 主讲首场——他讲的就是"The Long Now"这个概念本身。
Stay Foolish."
"Steve Jobs's 2005 Stanford speech is the basis of Brand's residual fame outside tech-history circles.""Steve Jobs 2005 年斯坦福那次演讲,是 Brand 在科技史圈外残存影响力的基础。"John Markoff, New Books in STS, 2022
这是后来 Whole Earth Discipline(2009 年 10 月)的预告。
Brand 在 Talks at Google(2010)的总结:
"We are now the keystone species on the planet, and it is ours to guard, whether well or badly, but we don't have a choice not to."" Stewart Brand, Talks at Google, ~2010
"We are terraforming Earth. If we're going to terraform it badly, that is terrible. Our only choice is to terraform well."" Stewart Brand, Talks at Google, ~2010
"Ecological balance is too important for sentiment; it requires science. The health of natural infrastructure is too compromised for passivity; it requires engineering."" Stewart Brand, Talks at Google, ~2010
"I fear that geoengineering may be necessary if mitigation efforts fail to stop climate change in time."" Stewart Brand, Talks at Google, ~2010
"The poor people of the world in the slums and squatter cities are the greenest people there are. They use the least energy and the least materials."" Stewart Brand, Talks at Google, ~2010
"We Are As Gods"
"We are as gods and HAVE TO get good at it."" Stewart Brand, Edge.org, 2009
"Climate change means turn off coal, that means turn on nuclear."" Stewart Brand, Edge.org, 2009
Revive & Restore
Colossal Biosciences
An Ecomodernist Manifesto
Brand 与 Barry Brook、Ruth DeFries、Erle Ellis、David Keith、Mark Lynas、Ted Nordhaus、Roger A. Pielke Jr.、Michael Shellenberger、Robert Stone 共同发表 An Ecomodernist Manifesto,把"生态实用主义"从 Brand 个人主张上升为运动纲领。
2021:We Are As Gods
2021 年导演 David Alvarado 和 Jason Sussberg 完成了 We Are As Gods 纪录片——以猛犸象项目为主线,全片由 Brian Eno 谱写 24 首原创配乐。
"When you get to the late 70s, Brian, and if you try to think of your life as an arc or a passage or story or a whole of any kind, it's actually quite hard.""Brian,到了七十多岁,如果你试图把自己的人生想成一条弧线、一段旅程、一个故事或任何一种整体,其实是很困难的。"Stewart Brand, We Are As Gods premiere, 2021
"Randomness is not a bad thing that happens. Randomness is the most creative thing that happens."" Stewart Brand, We Are As Gods premiere, 2021
2022:John Markoff
Whole Earth: The Many Lives of Stewart Brand,作者是 John Markoff(Brand 的老朋友、《纽约时报》前科技记者)。
"[Brand wrote in his personal journal that] much of what defined the counterculture 'was flat-out wrong, including drugs, communes, spiritual practice, New Left politics, solar water heaters, domes, small farms, free schools, free sex.""(Brand 在私人日记里写道)定义反文化的东西大多是'彻头彻尾错的,包括毒品、公社、精神修炼、新左派政治、太阳能热水器、圆顶、小农场、免费学校、自由性爱'。"Markoff biography, 2022, 引自 Arts Fuse review
"At heart Brand was an apolitical libertarian and a critic of the New Left and antiwar movement, so much as that at one point he was gleeful because Ken Kesey sicced the Hell's Angels on antiwar protesters.""Brand 骨子里是一个无政治倾向的自由意志主义者,也是新左派和反战运动的批评者;以至于有一刻他还为 Ken Kesey 怂恿地狱天使袭击反战抗议者而高兴。"Arts Fuse review of Markoff biography
Maintenance: Of Everything — Part One
"The first in a multi-volume work, Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One offers a comprehensive overview of the civilizational importance of maintenance, exploring insights from the maintenance of sailboats, vehicles, and weapons, with detours into manufacturing precision, manuals, military sustainment, and corrosion."" Stripe Press
"The book invites readers to understand the profound impact maintenance has on daily life and why taking responsibility for maintaining something — whether a motorcycle, monument, or planet — can be a radical act."" Stripe Press
"Maintenance is what we call care when it is applied to things as opposed to people."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"Maintainers are realists. They are always looking for what could go wrong and how to get ahead of it."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"Ownership is not just having legal possession of something; it is possessing the knowledge of how it functions, how to diagnose problems, and how to fix it."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"AI is like a hummingbird interacting with a redwood tree; they are linked, but the redwood isn't capable of paying attention to the hummingbird's speed.""AI 就像一只蜂鸟与一棵红杉互动——它们是连在一起的,但红杉无法关注到蜂鸟的速度。"Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"Examining what I'm bad at is a way to stay young and maintain a beginner's mind."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"At 87, being old is a half-time job."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"Treat your stuff like a child or a pet — that I-Thou relationship Martin Buber talked about."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"I can't do traditional meditation because I get bored."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
"Maintenance is the essential art of civilization; it's not just low-status work, it's the foundation that allows everything else to function."" Stewart Brand, The Ezra Klein Show, 2026-04-24
Maintenance: Of Everything — Part One
- 2026-04-24 The Ezra Klein Show —— 定性总纲("维护 = 施加于物的关怀""维护者是现实主义者"),见本章上文。
Convening & Institution-Building
"It's the job you always try to do, to put yourself out of business."" Stewart Brand, Demise Party, 1971
"When you can do the thing you're doing in your sleep, wake up. Go somewhere else."" Stewart Brand, The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"If you get addicted to being somebody, you will become a caricature of yourself. In order to escape from that, you have to give up on being somebody and be nobody for a while."" Stewart Brand, The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"If you want to change the world, you give someone a tool and teach them how to use it."" Markoff 概括 Brand(继承自 Buckminster Fuller)
"Changing human nature is hard and when you try, you mostly fail. Changing tools and technology is relatively easy and you can enable things."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Stewart made a brilliant marketing move by giving free accounts to influential technology writers like myself and Steven Levy, as well as to hackers.""Stewart 做了一个出色的市场操作——把免费账户送给像我和 Steven Levy 这样有影响力的科技作家,还有那些黑客们。"John Markoff, The Long Now Foundation, 2022
原因:种子用户是 Markoff、Levy(写文化的人)和 Hacker(造技术的人)。
"[Brand's pattern leaves] a kind of smog of dissipated insight... only the dead end of the commune, or the default of the corporation.""(Brand 的模式留下的是)一团弥漫开来的洞见之雾…… Benjamin Kunkel, New Republic, 2022(Markoff 传记书评)
Tools & Products
2.1 Access to Tools(工具的入口)
"We are as gods and might as well get good at it. So far, remotely done power and glory — as via government, big business, formal education, church — has succeeded to the point where gross defects obscure actual gains.""
"Ownership is not just having legal possession of something; it is possessing the knowledge of how it functions, how to diagnose problems, and how to fix it."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
Model T vs Rolls-Royce
"The Ford Model T was a rugged platform designed for dirt roads, with interchangeable parts that allowed users to repair and modify it themselves.""
"The Rolls-Royce was perfectly tuned and reliable, but so complex that you couldn't maintain it yourself.""Rolls-Royce 调校完美、运行可靠,但复杂到你自己根本维护不了。"The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
这条线一直回到 1968 年 Whole Earth Catalog 的"Access to Tools"。
"Get the best tools you can afford, let things become shiny with use, and honor the process of care."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
"Information wants to be expensive, because it's so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time."" Hackers Conference, 1984
"Information wants to be free and it wants to be expensive. That relationship is not contradictory; it's paradoxical in the sense that the more the one, the more the other."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Information is paradoxically both free and expensive; curation is where commercial value sits."" Tim Ferriss Show #281 总结
"Repair is a trauma for any system, and acting too quickly often makes the problem worse.""
"You need to think through the problem, disrupt the system minimally, and back out carefully. It's a highly intellectual process that rewards patience over speed."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
Time & Pace
3.1 Pace Layers 总公式
"Fast learns, slow remembers. Fast proposes, slow disposes. Fast is discontinuous, slow is continuous... Fast gets all our attention, slow has all the power."" The Clock of the Long Now, 1999
"The fast moving parts of civilization get all the attention, but the slow parts have all the power."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
(Bathtub Curve)
"[The bathtub curve] applies to bodies, buildings, infrastructure, and lives — high-maintenance at the beginning, low in the middle, high again at the end.""(浴缸曲线)适用于身体、建筑、基础设施和人生——开始高维护、中间低维护、最后又高维护。"The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
"The Clock of the Long Now is a philosophical symbol for long-term thinking and the importance of considering the distant future in our current actions."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
"Learning to manage the world is like learning to ride a crazy horse. You can figure out the situation of the crazy horse and figure out how to manage the damn thing."" Stewart Brand, The Long Now Foundation, 2022(引用 Gregory Bateson)
"We are introducing new pace layers into the world. AI is like a hummingbird interacting with a redwood tree; they are linked, but the redwood isn't capable of paying attention to the hummingbird's speed."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
Environment & Climate
4.1 Anthropocene
"We are now the keystone species on the planet, and it is ours to guard, whether well or badly, but we don't have a choice not to."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"We are terraforming Earth. If we're going to terraform it badly, that is terrible. Our only choice is to terraform well."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"The poor people of the world in the slums and squatter cities are the greenest people there are. They use the least energy and the least materials."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"Nuclear waste with 20 tons of fuel becomes 20 tons of waste. 2.9 million tons of coal turns into 8 million tons of carbon dioxide, which goes into everybody's atmosphere where we can't do anything about it."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"The moral imperative is to make these tools available to farmers who need them to improve their yields and livelihoods."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"I fear that geoengineering may be necessary if mitigation efforts fail to stop climate change in time."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"Ecological balance is too important for sentiment; it requires science. The health of natural infrastructure is too compromised for passivity; it requires engineering."" Talks at Google, ~2010
4.7 "We Are As Gods"
- 1968: "might as well get good at it"(不如学着做神)
- 2009: "have to get good at it"(必须学着做神)
- 2026: 做神的方式是 maintenance(维护)
"The argument against nuclear power has effectively evaporated due to the massive energy demands of AI and crypto. We need climatically clean energy, and nuclear provides that in abundance... Nuclear energy will also make large-scale desalination practical, which could turn deserts near oceans into productive farmland."" The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06
"The opposition has simply been outlived. They were never able to convince younger generations... young people who want to power AI or crypto-mining are looking at nuclear energy through a lens of utility and scalability rather than the historical trauma of nuclear weapons or Three Mile Island."" The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie, 2026-03-18
"If you put solar collectors on the same acres currently used for biofuel crops, you generate significantly more value and energy... [biofuel] is simply not an efficient use of land."" The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06
"Physical space is not the scarce input we need to worry about. If you have lived in a crowded place like the Netherlands or South Korea, you realize that humans are remarkably good at living in complex, dense environments. The wear and tear on the social fabric, our biology, and our psychology makes isolating humans in space for long periods a losing proposition... We should focus on being a 'living planet' rather than looking for an exit strategy."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
"Humanity has been around for a long time. Biology is incredibly resilient and robust. The world-ending trope is just a waste of mind."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
Information & Community
5.1 YOYOW(你拥有自己的话)
"You own your own words, you're responsible for your own words, and it's actually a real you, not a bot."" The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"When you have anonymity, people can pretend to be other people. Within two days, it had gone completely sociopathic."" The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"It's a mixed bag from the go and it's a mixed bag every step of the way."" The Long Now Foundation, 2022
5.4 Hacker
"The hackers are the technicians of this science — 'It's a term of derision and also the ultimate compliment.' They are the ones who translate human demands into code that the machines can understand and act on."" Rolling Stone, 1972
"Ready or not, computers are coming to the people. That's good news, maybe the best since psychedelics."" Rolling Stone, 1972
"Where a few brilliantly stupid computers can wreak havoc, a host of modest computers serving innumerable individual purposes can be healthful, can repair havoc, feed life."" Rolling Stone, 1972
Change & Creativity
6.1 Stay Foolish =
"The only way you will get to those mountains is by being foolish, by trying weird stuff, and by being random. It gets you off the low hill of fitness to potentially a high mountain of fitness."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
6.2 Stay Foolish
"Stay Foolish is a refreshment exercise to keep you from clinging to the past or a local optimum.""Stay Foolish 是一项保持新鲜的练习,让你不至于死抓着过去或者一个局部最优。"Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Randomness is not a bad thing that happens. Randomness is the most creative thing that happens."" We Are As Gods premiere, 2021
"The infinite game is the infinite improvement of the games we play. Civilization's story is the constant improvement of the rules and the freedom to do that indefinitely."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017(改写自 James P. Carse)
"The way to make a lot of money is to have a very good idea and then be extremely careful never to have another."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"We should flip from being fearful about unintended consequences to being welcoming about situations that might have them, because that is how we find surprises that are surprisingly good."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"The way to critique a new technology is to embrace it, experiment with it, and make mistakes with it to see if you can break it."" The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie, 2026-03-18 [00:29:04]
6.7 pair Precautionary with Vigilance
"Pair Precautionary Principle with a Vigilance Principle so caution and experimentation balance."" Talks at Google, ~2010
"I look for things that are overlooked and that can 'make circuit' with the world. I am not interested in what everyone else is doing; I am interested in things that feel like they have been discarded or disdained but have latent power. The Whole Earth Catalog took 'do-it-yourself' garage projects—which were looked down upon—and turned them into a powerful cultural tool. Right now, I am focusing on maintenance because it is a nuisance that everyone avoids, yet it is the foundation of everything that lasts."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
"I had the specific skills in writing and magazine design I needed to execute it without needing a million dollars of capital."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017(讲 Whole Earth Catalog 创办时)
"In an early career, the algorithm is 'yes and less no.' At a certain point, that flips into 'no unless yes."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Having a certain amount of fitness and strength makes you proud. And being proud is the most reliable source of happiness that I know."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"At 87, being old is a half-time job."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
"Examining what I'm bad at is a way to stay young and maintain a beginner's mind."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
"I can't do traditional meditation because I get bored."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
"When you get to the late 70s, Brian, and if you try to think of your life as an arc or a passage or story or a whole of any kind, it's actually quite hard.""Brian,到了七十多岁,如果你试图把自己的人生想成一条弧线、一段旅程、一个故事或任何一种整体,其实是很困难的。"We Are As Gods premiere, 2021
"If you get addicted to being somebody, you will become a caricature of yourself."" The Long Now Foundation, 2022
"I do not understand people who go quiescent intellectually as they get older. As you age, you gain more control of your time and more savvy on how to make things happen... We are moving from a focus on 'lifespan' to 'healthspan,' which is the period during which you can remain engaged and productive... I feel like I am just hitting my stride."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
"He winces when people call him a futurist because he thinks of himself as a pragmatist. You iterate, and if new facts arise, you adjust your worldview."" Brand, New Books in STS, 2022
"Leaders should be willing to publicly say what they were wrong about and how they changed their minds; if a public figure claims they're never wrong, you know immediately not to waste your time with them."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Science is the only news. All the other stuff — politics, fashion — goes in cycles, but science and technology are where most of what we consider progress comes from."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017
"Treat every opinion as a hypothesis to be falsified, not a position to defend."" Tim Ferriss Show #281, 2017(Brand 自陈的生物学家训练遗产)
"Be a fox, not a hedgehog — hold contradictions."" Talks at Google, ~2010(引 Isaiah Berlin)
8.7 I-Thou 关系
"Treat your stuff like a child or a pet — that I-Thou relationship Martin Buber talked about."" The Ezra Klein Show, 2026
8.8 Capitalism with Guardrails(带护栏的资本主义)
"Capitalism with guardrails."" New Books in STS, 2022
(Kodak)
"Kodak understood they needed to transition from silver halide film to digital photography, but they were loyal to their home base in Rochester, New York. They realized they needed software talent to survive, but software engineers were not going to move to Rochester. They chose loyalty to their location over the necessity of evolving, which ultimately cost them their business.""Kodak The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06
"I didn't set out to be a 'decentralist' by ideology; it was a byproduct of my background in biology and my career as an artist. Darwinian evolution is the most decentralized system imaginable—it is self-organizing at every level and every scale, far beyond the constraints of any market economy... I eventually talked myself into being a Darwinian because it explains how complex, resilient systems function without a central architect."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
"Buckminster Fuller was a brilliant engineer who revolutionized his own behavior, but his approach was essentially an input-output model—he wanted to solve everything through engineering. Gregory Bateson served as a necessary corrective to that worldview. Bateson understood that every system is self-referential and that we are always immersed in the very systems we attempt to isolate and study... I learned to value the engineering rigor of the former while embracing the systemic, humble awareness of the latter.""Buckminster Fuller Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
9.12–9.14 再补入 The Michael Shermer Show(2026-05-06)与 The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie(2026-03-18)两场巡讲,把命题延伸到 EV 更替、YouTube 手册与"可互换零件是政府播的种"。
"There's just a simple fact about the laws of nature and the second law of thermodynamics that things are going to break. There's a lot more ways to be broken than to be in good working order."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19 [00:03:01]
"Complex systems doing interesting things, whether mechanical, technological, or biological, are very, very far from equilibrium because they're in very specific organizational patterns... Fighting against that can be thought of as what maintenance is all about."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19
"I don't think it is helpful to 'cosmicize' entropy as a fiendish, devilish thing. To be alive is to do things to keep yourself going. Whether it is a beaver maintaining its dam, or humans maintaining their bodies, homes, and institutions, maintenance is simply the fundamental process of keeping a system functional."" The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06
"To be alive is to be doing something that keeps itself going. There is nothing alive that does not have to perform maintenance to sustain its existence."" The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06 [00:09:08]
"Skilled maintainers actually wind up having to know more about the system than the people who designed it and built it."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19 [00:21:32]
"Whether a thing is mature, resilient, and robust in the world depends on whether the makers, the designers, and the manufacturers pay very close attention to what the maintainers are learning. If they do... they will design for lower, better, easier maintenance. And if they don't, the system can be really, really stupid and not get smarter."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19
"A lot of innovation actually emerges from the process of maintenance. People who are tasked with keeping a system running are often the ones who realize how difficult it is and identify ways to improve it."" The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie, 2026-03-18
"Really, what you want to do is maintain the thing that the system is in, and probably the system that that system is in, at least two levels up hierarchically."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19 [00:14:12]
Pete Seeger)
"You have to consider that one of the major arts of civilization is maintenance... maintenance is profoundly, is more essential than any of these other things that are flipping it around."" Stewart Brand(引 Pete Seeger), Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19 [00:52-ish]
"I'm pretty sure it's extra resilient, partly because so many parts of the civilization are quite different from each other. One may go down, and the rest of the world shrugs... The others can go along, and everybody can learn from each other's mistakes."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19
"Robin Knox Johnson's style was 'whatever comes, deal with it,' showing incredible resourcefulness.""Robin Knox-Johnston 的风格是'来什么,处理什么',展现出惊人的应变能力。"EconTalk, 2026-04-06
Donald Crowhurst(作弊自杀者)——病态的乐观主义者。
"Donald Crowhurst, a pathological optimist, hoped for the best, which led to cheating and his demise.""Donald Crowhurst,一个病态的乐观主义者,寄望于最好的结果——这把他引向作弊和毁灭。"EconTalk, 2026-04-06
Bernard Moitessier(主动弃赛者)——为最坏做准备、因此自由。
"Bernard Moitessier prepared for the worst, which freed him. Even in storms, he was relaxed because he built his equipment strong and maintained it daily, believing a sailboat is 'new every day.""Bernard Moitessier
"Good maintainers are basically realists, which probably looks to other people like pessimism because they look at their motorcycle, and they're looking for signs of oil leaks.""
"The AK-47 was incredibly reliable and easy to clean and fix... The AK-47 has a cleaning rod mounted right under the barrel. American troops... didn't have [cleaning] rods with them in the field... Imagine you're in combat, you're running or you're flat on the ground... So the AK-47 was designed from the start to be incredibly reliable.""AK-47 极其可靠、易于清洁和修理……AK-47 把通条直接装在枪管下方。
"There is a place for things that are cheap, fast, and barely in control, and things that are exquisitely tuned to perfection."" The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie, 2026-03-18 [00:18:55]
"In the US and NATO militaries, it's the non-commissioned officers that are responsible for maintenance... The Russian military does not really have NCOs... and most of the Arab militaries do not. When you don't have that, it just doesn't get done, and then you lose the war."" Sean Carroll's Mindscape, 2026-01-19 [00:34-ish]
"As an officer, you develop a command voice and expect to be in charge... When I started the Whole Earth Catalog, I wasn't deferential or uncertain about taking charge... You learn to command people, monitor their work, and conduct after-action reviews to learn from what went well and what went badly.""
"One advantage of being in your 80s is you've seen a lot of things come and go. I've seen the personal computer come and not go. I've seen the internet come and not go. And clearly AI is going to be in that lineage of something that comes and doesn't go away.""
"AI is going to help a lot with that. But then we'll be in this weird circumstance of we're going to spend more and more of our lives arguing with robots.""AI EconTalk, 2026-04-06
→ ⚠️ 讨论区的 takeaway 把"自动化 → 警觉性丧失"作为风险提炼;这是节目方的框架,Brand 本人的落点更接近"embrace it, become comfortable and uncomfortable with it, adjust it"(与 §6.6 拥抱意外后果一致),而非纯粹的警觉性焦虑。
The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie(2026-03-18,自由意志主义视角)。
他把 Musk 类比成 Henry Ford(§2.3 Model T 那条线的当代续集):
"Elon Musk is a manufacturing genius, much like Henry Ford. He took manufacturing quality to a new level and created a vehicle that is a massive functional improvement over combustion engines... he didn't try to protect his patents aggressively, and he leveraged the data collected from his vehicles to send improvements over the air.""Elon Musk 是一个制造天才,很像 Henry Ford。 The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06
"The horse was the human vehicle for 6,000 years. Horses have not gone away; they have been replaced on the highways, but there are probably more horses in America now than when they were our primary mode of transport."" The Michael Shermer Show, 2026-05-06 [00:00:15]
"YouTube has essentially replaced the traditional manual. It confers agency to the individual on a massive scale... you can search for the make, model, and year of your device, and you will find half a dozen videos showing different techniques to solve your specific problem. It is one of the richest sources of a better life that the internet provides.""YouTube The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie, 2026-03-18
"The development of interchangeable parts was essentially driven by the government. In the 19th century, the U.S. government spent millions of dollars over 40 years trying to get manufacturers to produce parts with extreme accuracy—down to a 50th of a millimeter... while this state-led push for standardization might seem anti-libertarian, it ultimately created a more robust, decentralized ecosystem where anyone could fix their own equipment, much like the AK-47, where any part from any rifle will fit any other."" The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie, 2026-03-18
"We look at the difference between Stonehenge, the Egyptian pyramids, and the Ise Shrine in Japan. Nobody knows what Stonehenge was for; the pyramids represent a dead religion; but the Ise Shrine is as alive today as it was 1,500 years ago. The difference is maintenance. The Ise Shrine is rebuilt every 20 years, institutionalizing the culture and keeping it active... Maintenance is often viewed as a chore or a nuisance with no short-term economic value, but it is the secret to institutional longevity."" Conversations with Tyler, 2022-01-26
A:"We Are As Gods" 的三重升级(贯穿 60 年)
- 1968:"might as well get good at it"(不如学着做神)— 太空科技带来的乐观主义
- 2009:"have to get good at it"(必须学着做神)— 气候变化的强制必要性
|---|---|---|
| Whole Earth Catalog | 1968 | 1971 Demise Party |
| Hackers Conference | 1984 | 1986
| The WELL | 1985 | 1990s 转手 |
| Global Business Network | 1987 | 2000 卖给 Monitor |
| Long Now Foundation | 1996 |
| Revive & Restore | 2012 | 2017 spin out(妻子 Phelan 主理) |
It's the job you always try to do, to put yourself out of business."(这是你应该一直追求的工作——让自己失业。)
- "The Long Now"这个名字本身是 Eno 的发明
- How Buildings Learn BBC 6 集纪录片由 Eno 配乐
- Long Now Foundation
- 2021 年 We Are As Gods 纪录片由 Eno 谱写 24 首原创配乐
- 为什么他在 1980 年代转向计算机和 GBN("电动 Kool-Aid 管理咨询顾问")
"Rather than being the instigator of the negative aspects of the valley, Brand was an expression of the forces that were already coming together to create it."" John Markoff, New Books in STS, 2022
Originator
"Silicon Valley was not the invention of a single individual, and Brand synthesized rather than created the converging forces.""Silicon Valley 不是任何一个个人发明的,Brand 综合了那些已经在汇聚的力量,而不是创造了它们。"John Markoff 概括, New Books in STS, 2022
这是 Fred Turner 在 From Counterculture to Cyberculture 里称之为 "network forum" 的角色。
4.1 Markoff(赞许派)
- Brand 是 "Zelig-figure with sixth sense for the moment"
4.2 Harris / Kunkel / Vinsel(怀疑派)
Malcolm Harris(左翼,Palo Alto 作者,2023):
"There's an ideological continuity stretching from the railroad barons who enriched themselves via federal government's largesse, through Stanford alum Herbert Hoover's cronyish 'associative state,' and into modern day Silicon Valley with its government-funded origins, libertarian ideology, and fixation on optimization and automation."" Malcolm Harris, Palo Alto, 2023
Benjamin Kunkel(New Republic, 2022):
"[Brand's pattern leaves] a kind of smog of dissipated insight... only the dead end of the commune, or the default of the corporation.""(Brand 的模式留下的是)一团弥漫开来的洞见之雾…… Benjamin Kunkel, New Republic, 2022
Lee Vinsel(MIT Technology Review, 2026):批评 Maintenance 一书"政治上 tone-deaf"——Brand "knows better"。
4.3 Brand
"Much of what defined the counterculture 'was flat-out wrong, including drugs, communes, spiritual practice, New Left politics, solar water heaters, domes, small farms, free schools, free sex."" Markoff biography
- Buckminster Fuller —
- Gregory Bateson — Steps Toward an Ecology of Mind;"Crazy horse"隐喻;coevolution 概念
- Paul Ehrlich —
- Doug Engelbart — Mother of All Demos;Intelligence Augmentation 而非 AI
Pace Layers
- James P. Carse — Finite and Infinite Games
- Johan Huizinga — Homo Ludens
- Joel Mokyr / James C. Scott —
- David Deutsch — The Beginning of Infinity——"没有根本性限制"的乐观认识论
- Martin Buber — I-Thou 关系
- Aldo Leopold —
The Long Now",Pace Layers 共同起草
