The Expanding Dark Forest and Generative AI"(AI 内容洪水将人类驱离开放网络)、"Home-Cooked Software and Barefoot Developers"(LLM + 本地优先 = 社区嵌入式开发的复兴)、以及最近的 "A Treatise on AI Chatbots Undermining the Enlightenment"(反 sycophancy)——她反复在做的一件事是:把"什么是好的 AI 交互"这个问题从工程师的"能做什么"翻译成人类学/认知科学的"应该做什么以及人类如何理解它"。
I use anthropology to look at the invisible rules that govern how people behave in their societies and apply that to web development... I am interested in the animus behind those choices."(人类学训练让她看见每个设计决策背后的"为什么"。)"Most language model implementations should be 'spell-check sized.'"(反对 universal text box 的"什么都能做"叙事。)"Almost everything we talk about in the abstract realm is based in our embodied experience of the world."(embodied cognition 是她贯穿所有领域的底层信仰。)"We have very poor affordances in our current web interfaces for forgiveness and having gracious space for people to fail in public."(她对 affordance 的直接调用,把它和"宽容失败的公共空间"挂钩,是她思考的特征签名。)"A California VC shouldn't be trying to solve the problems of a street seller in Turkey or a homemaker in Tokyo because he can't."(她拒绝去加州、坚持留在伦敦、为 software diversity 辩护的根。)
"I was always obsessed with drawing and art and visuals as a child."" Sketchnote Army, 2024-03-05
"I learned HTML and CSS on Neopets at age 13."" Sketchnote Army, 2024-03-05
- 结果:这个决定让她后来成为这个领域里少有的——能同时讨论 Erving Goffman 的"performance of the self"和 web component 的 designer-anthropologist。
"Anthropology taught me to look at cultural phenomena as 'alien' rather than inevitable. Instead of assuming that the current state of the web or our digital habits are the only way things could be, I treat them as a series of historical events. I constantly ask why we do things a certain way and what other paths we could have taken.""
"Worked as a waitress briefly, then freelanced in web design 'until I figure out how to get a real job. I never got a real job."" Sketchnote Army, 2024-03-05
"I eventually realized that 'UX design was a field' and made the connection: 'this is like anthropology, but with a different name."" Sketchnote Army, 2024-03-05
"When designing visuals, you don't just jump to drawing clocks. You think about, okay time... you go back to language and find what imagery you can pick out."" Sketchnote Army, 2024-03-05
"[00:23:38] Almost everything we talk about in the abstract realm is based in our embodied experience of the world.""[00:23:38] 我们在抽象领域里谈论的几乎一切,都根植于我们对世界的具身经验。"Metamuse #37 with Maggie Appleton, 2021-08-19
- "Just JavaScript":与 Dan Abramov 合作。
"Many JavaScript textbooks teach incorrect mental models, leading to bugs when developers don't understand how variables or objects are reassigned and passed through functions... We aren't just teaching syntax; we are visualizing the underlying mental model so that developers can actually 'see' the state changes they are creating.""
这个 garden 后来成为她最重要的职业资产——她在 Sketchnote Army 直说"is the primary career driver"。
- 决策:写了 "A Brief History & Ethos of the Digital Garden"(约 2020),系统阐述 garden 范式,并把自己的网站重做成一个 garden,每个页面标注 growth stage(seedling / budding / evergreen)。
"[00:18:29] Metaphors highlight certain concepts and hide others. We pick metaphors that pull out certain aspects and make others invisible.""[00:18:29] 隐喻凸显某些概念、隐藏另一些。 Swyx Mixtape, 2021-02-14
她离开 Egghead 后加入 HASH 做 Head of Design,主要工作是 Block Protocol(一种让 Notion 类块编辑器跨应用互操作的开放标准)。
"I found the results were on par with what Google Scholar or Semantic Scholar would turn up. But the Elicit results show why it returns certain papers."" Joining Ought, 2022-07
"defining problems, validating they were actually problems, writing those problems clearly and concisely in documents, rigorously documenting my exploration of possible solutions."" Leaving Elicit, 2024-06
"Language models and neural networks are all relatively new... We don't have many established design patterns yet."" Joining Ought, 2022-07
"Many companies are defaulting to a 'copilot' or chatbot interface because it is a low-barrier-to-entry solution that avoids the hard work of actual UX research. While a chatbot is a decent interface for generic tasks like simple web searches, it is rarely the optimal way to present complex information. Real-world tasks, such as scientific research or healthcare management, require specific, expert-driven interfaces that provide richer, more dynamic experiences.""
她在 ShopTalk(2023-09,Elicit 时期最早的长访谈之一)把 Elicit 的反幻觉方案讲成了一个系统设计问题而非模型问题:
"We don't rely on a single generative call; instead, we use a process called composition, where we perform many small language model calls alongside traditional programming... we might ask the model to find the most relevant paragraphs in a paper, rank them, and return the exact quote to the user. By linking every answer to a specific source in the document and designing interfaces that encourage human vetting, we make it easy for users to double-check the model's work.""
"[00:16:37] The way the vast majority of us should be relating to language models right now is as rubber ducks, not as sources of truth.""[00:16:37] 我们绝大多数人现在与语言模型相处的正确方式,是把它当橡皮鸭,而不是当事实来源。"ShopTalk #583, 2023-09-18
"[00:36:04] Even if the thing you are designing is pixels in Figma, what you are actually designing is a live interactive system.""[00:36:04] 即便你在设计的东西是 Figma 里的像素,你实际在设计的是一个实时交互系统。"Dive Club Ep. 57, 2024-06-13
她明说 LLM 产品在 Figma 里造不了假——"you need to be in a live environment with working data to understand the limitations and affordances of the system you are actually building"(你必须在有真实数据的 live 环境里,才能理解你实际在构建的系统的局限与 affordance)。
- "game tape" 学习法:学 LLM 栈这类新技能时,Google 到的高层文章"usually useless because they are too vague"(通常没用,太空泛);她找的是"游戏录像"——把整条 ML 链拆开的 GitHub repo 和 Colab notebook、坐在工程师旁边看他们 40 个屏幕的真实工作流。
她也在这一集给出了"synthesis > generation"的最明确表述——"everyone is currently obsessed with generating content, but the real value lies in building tools focused on critical reasoning and systematic processes"(所有人都痴迷于生成内容,但真正的价值在于构建面向批判性推理和系统性流程的工具)——这是 Elicit 产品选型(文献综述而非内容生成)的哲学根基,也是她 Dark Forest 论点的建设性一面。
"We need to diversify the kinds of people who make software."" Leaving Elicit, 2024-06
"A California VC shouldn't be trying to solve the problems of a street seller in Turkey or a homemaker in Tokyo because he can't. No amount of Zoom interviews will provide the context required to solve their problems well."" localfirst.fm #13, 2024-08-13
"most of these people don't give a shit about programming and don't want to learn it."" Home-Cooked Software and Barefoot Developers, ~2024
"Building features that solve every single long tail need requires a lot of engineering labor and engineers are very expensive."" Home-Cooked Software and Barefoot Developers
"The Venn diagram of people with the skills to make home-cooked software and professional developers is essentially a concentric circle."" Home-Cooked Software and Barefoot Developers
"I am a mediocre developer without language models, but with them, I am almost a full developer. The amount of work they allow me to accomplish that I could not do on my own is astonishing."" localfirst.fm #13, 2024-08-13
"Language models perform best when they have access to specific, relevant data. If that data is already on your machine, you don't need to send it to a cloud provider like OpenAI or Anthropic, which is expensive and raises significant privacy concerns. Running models locally allows for immediate, low-latency performance without the three-minute wait times often associated with complex cloud API calls."" localfirst.fm #13, 2024-08-13
"It's about building things that don't need to scale to 'Mark Zuckerberg levels."" localfirst.fm #13, 2024-08-13
"We are missing standardized, easy-to-use frameworks that handle user authentication, database synchronization, and deployment for non-experts. I am looking for projects like Jazz or DXOS to mature into a full-stack, local-first framework that an LLM can be trained on. Once an LLM can act as a product manager — handling technical decisions like data modeling and backend architecture while the user simply provides requirements — we will have reached the necessary inflection point for widespread end-user programming."" localfirst.fm #13, 2024-08-13
"Take me through a slow step-by-step reasoning process with a model, show me every decision it's making along the way." "I find the black box approach so troublesome because you end up in situations where like junior developers... prompt Cursor to build the whole thing for them, they have no idea what's in the files. They don't know how anything's chained together. There should be a step in there where Cursor teaches them what it's done, not just doing the thing."" Code && Content (Sanity), 2025-03-15 [00:08:23][00:08:34][00:08:47]
"I'm trying to build prototypes that encourage us to like teach us how to do better critical thinking with language models... how do I get it to not just give me an answer, but teach me how to be a more rigorous thinker and enable me to go through a process that does that."" Code && Content (Sanity), 2025-03-15 [00:19:35][00:19:45]
"The way they generate images is never going to be able to be used to generate diagrams or useful instructional images just because of the process. It's too just like copy based off the pixels you've seen, make more pixels like this."" Code && Content (Sanity), 2025-03-15 [00:14:53][00:15:04]
"What the kind of architecture you would need is much more structured. It would be like, okay, take in the concept, like break down the component parts, do a bunch of text-based thinking first, you know, brainstorm metaphors, you know, think about composition and structure, and then maybe generate like an SVG based on that content. But I think it would need quite a tight reasoning chain that I haven't seen anyone attempt to do yet."" Code && Content (Sanity), 2025-03-15 [00:15:16][00:15:34]
她点名 Eraser(输入代码库的文本描述、生成架构图)是"最接近的尝试",但判断整个方向"还要很多年"。
"I use it to brainstorm metaphors... when it gives me the list of the cliche ones, I go, okay, I didn't really mean like that. Let's go more in this direction. And if you do it at least 10 or 12 times, I feel like then I can maybe get to more interesting stuff. But using it more to help with like lateral thinking and like a thesaurus in a certain way too... it's never going to be like genuinely creative or original... off the bat."" Code && Content (Sanity), 2025-03-15 [00:13:02]–[00:13:33]
"We're very far away from like genuinely automating anyone's job, even if they are the most junior developer in the world... You still need someone to translate human needs and communicate with the designers and communicate with the PMs. There will never not be a human developer who needs to manage this process."" Code && Content (Sanity), 2025-03-15 [00:16:51][00:17:16][00:17:21]
"on paper my life sounds terrible, but in lived reality I'm happier than ever been."" maggieappleton.com/now, 2026-01
"Agents. AI agents are all I can see, read, build, and think about these days.""Agents。 maggieappleton.com/now, 2026-01
"The pace of change in agent world makes JavaScript fatigue look quaint.""agent 世界的变化速度,让 JavaScript fatigue 显得古雅。"maggieappleton.com/now, 2026-01
值得注意的是她罕见地公开承认信心受损——"I've lost a little of my confidence as a researcher and contributor to The Discourse"(我作为研究者和 The Discourse 参与者的信心丢了一些)——并把应对策略定为转向"可及的、高影响"的工作,动力来源是她所说的 capabilities overhang(能力悬垂:模型已有能力与其实际应用之间的落差)。
- 背景:2025-2026 年 coding agent(Cursor、Cline、Claude Code、Devin、SWE-Agent 等)成熟,单个开发者可以同时调度多个 agent 做开发。
"The hard question is no longer how to build it. It's should we build it. Agreeing on what to build is the new bottleneck."" One Developer, Two Dozen Agents, Zero Alignment, 2026-04
"believing individual productivity leads to great software… is 'nine women make a baby in one month' logic."" One Developer, Two Dozen Agents, Zero Alignment, 2026-04
"teams can think rigorously together about hard problems" and build "a few exceptional things, rather than a thousand crappy ones."" One Developer, Two Dozen Agents, Zero Alignment, 2026-04
ACE(Agent Collaboration Environment)— 讲台上的具体产品形态(AI Engineer 2026 talk)
前面几段基于的是她在 maggieappleton.com 上的同名讲座文字稿。2026 年 4 月 26 日她在 AI Engineer 大会上把这个论点讲成了一个带 live demo 的完整 talk("Collaborative AI Engineering: One Dev, Two Dozen Agents, Zero Alignment"),并第一次公开演示了 GitHub Next 的原型——注意名字在讲台版本里被展开为 ACE = Agent Collaboration Environment(档案前文沿用她文章里的简写 "Ace",是同一个东西)。
"When production is nearly free, the real cost of software development becomes opportunity cost—the realization that you cannot build everything, and every feature you choose to build comes at the expense of another."" AI Engineer, 2026-04-26(QA 综述)
"Without rigorous alignment, teams risk shipping a high volume of 'vibe-coded slop' rather than high-quality, impactful software."" AI Engineer, 2026-04-26(QA 综述)
"These tools do not provide a shared space for teams to discuss plans, gather context, or work with agents collectively, which forces all alignment to happen at the end of the process—at the pull request stage—when it is often too late to course-correct."" AI Engineer, 2026-04-26(QA 综述)
"Agents can act as a bridge for the human context that is usually locked away in people's heads—such as product vision, organizational history, and political dynamics... They can summarize what teammates have been working on, notify you about decisions that affect your specific features, or pull you into conversations where your expertise is needed.""agent AI Engineer, 2026-04-26(QA 综述)
Swyx Mixtape:
"[00:09:12] We have very poor affordances in our current web interfaces for forgiveness and having gracious space for people to fail in public.""[00:09:12] 我们当前的 web 界面在'宽容'和'让人在公共空间体面地失败'方面,affordance 非常贫瘠。"Swyx Mixtape, 2021-02-14
在自己的 garden 网站上,她为每篇文章标注 growth stage(seedling / budding / evergreen)。
"I assign a 'growth stage' to every piece — ranging from 'seedling' (fleeting, unpolished ideas) to 'evergreen' (researched, polished, and stable). This top-down structure helps readers understand how seriously to take a piece of content.""我给每篇都标注'生长阶段'——从 seedling(短暂的、未打磨的想法)到 evergreen(研究过的、打磨过的、稳定的)。 The Informed Life, 2023-07-16
"By framing your writing as a 'work in progress' or a 'bad draft,' you lower the stakes for yourself and manage reader expectations. You are essentially creating a contract with your audience that these are thoughts you are currently testing, which allows for forgiveness and provides space to fail or change your mind in public."" Swyx Mixtape, 2021-02-14
2. Chatbot 是 affordance 灾难。 在 Squish Meets Structure 里:
"She criticizes interfaces that 'offload cognitive labour to the user' by providing no affordances or guidance about capabilities. Good design establishes what tasks the system actually performs."" Squish Meets Structure(essay)
"Most language model implementations should be 'spell-check sized' — doing one specific task excellently rather than promising everything."" Squish Meets Structure
"Folk interfaces are when users reappropriate existing software to solve their own problems... seeing interfaces sideways — recognizing applications as 'collections of functions and affordances to repurpose' rather than following designer-intended paths.""Folk interface 是用户重新挪用现有软件来解决自己问题的现象……' Folk Interfaces
"Humans naturally map abstract reasoning onto our physical experience of the world, such as our understanding of 'up' and 'down,' or 'front' and 'back.' When I illustrate programming concepts, I tap into these embodied metaphors — like showing a higher-order component 'on top' of a lower-order one. Because everyone has a body, we get these spatial relationships for free.""
这是为什么"in front of"、"behind the scenes"、"deep in the stack"这些隐喻在编程领域到处出现——它们不是装饰,是 affordance 设计。
核心命题来自 "Language Model Sketchbook, or Why I Hate Chatbots":
"Chatbots are 'flexible, familiar, and easy to implement,' they represent 'the lazy solution' and fail to explore deeper possibilities for human-AI interaction.""Chatbots 是'灵活、熟悉、易实现'的,它们代表'懒惰的解决方案',未能探索人机交互的更深可能性。"Language Model Sketchbook
- Branches(分支):探索因果链。
"Research shows frequent AI use correlates with reduced critical thinking."" A Treatise on AI Chatbots Undermining the Enlightenment
"ChatGPT has often responded, with patently insincere flattery: 'That's a great question.' It has never responded: 'That's the wrong question.""ChatGPT A Treatise on AI Chatbots Undermining the Enlightenment
"One should never so exhaust a subject that nothing is left for readers to do." — Montesquieu""
"The most useful books are those that the readers write half of themselves." — Voltaire""
"use AI as a tutor that adapts to a student's individual learning pace, rather than just a tool to generate essays... teach students to use it as a critical partner that identifies gaps in their arguments or checks for supporting evidence.""
"My skepticism stems from my background in embodied cognition and cognitive science. Human intelligence is deeply tied to our bodies and our interactions with physical space, time, color, and texture — none of which are inputs for current language models. Because these models lack physical grounding and rely on statistical prediction, they are prone to recency bias and often act as eager 'yes-men' that mirror the user's own biases rather than critically evaluating the quality of their output.""
"the 'stochastic parrot' framework correctly identifies the probabilistic nature of language models, it often underestimates their practical utility and the sophisticated architectural design required to make them effective for complex tasks."" Hanselminutes summary, 2024-12-27
她对 AI 这个词本身也有怀疑——她在 "Empty Pointers and Constellations of AI" 里说:
"Referring to something as 'AI' is a flag you probably don't know much about the industry."" Empty Pointers and Constellations of AI
"It's become an empty pointer. We attempt to point at possible futures and find ourselves all looking in opposite directions."" Empty Pointers and Constellations of AI
The Expanding Dark Forest and Generative AI" 一文里的核心论断:
"We're about to drown in a sea of pedestrian takes. An explosion of noise that drown[s] out any signal."" The Expanding Dark Forest and Generative AI
"When you encounter a flood of social media comments, LinkedIn posts, or images on platforms like Pinterest that are clearly generated by AI agents rather than humans, it creates a sense of loneliness.""
她最尖锐的批评在 "Tools for Thought as Cultural Practices, not Computational Objects" 里:
"The current 'tools for thought' movement reflects specific biases: 'distinctly computer-oriented, male, American, middle-class flavour' shaped by California tech pioneers (Bush, Engelbart, Kay, etc.)."" Tools for Thought as Cultural Practices
"Contemporary note-taking apps represent what she mockingly calls 'computational mediums for white-collar knowledge work' — excluding artistic, embodied, and non-Western thinking practices."" Tools for Thought as Cultural Practices
"Tools for thought include writing, drawing, maps, notation systems, epic poetry, the Socratic method, scientific methodology, and Zettelkastens — none requiring computers.""Tools for thought 包括写作、绘画、地图、符号系统、史诗、苏格拉底方法、科学方法、卡片盒笔记——没有一个需要计算机。"Tools for Thought as Cultural Practices
1. Competitive vs complementary artifacts(竞争性 vs 互补性认知工具)+ 拿走测试。
"[00:29:20] Competitive artifacts do the cognitive work for you and diminish your skills. Complementary artifacts teach you new cognitive skills while you are using the tool.""[00:29:20] 竞争性工具替你完成认知工作、削弱你的技能。 MIT Media Lab lecture, 2025-01-24
"[00:45:07] If I took this tool away, would I be more capable without it than I was before? The best tools teach you things in the process of using them.""[00:45:07] 如果把这个工具拿走,我会比之前更有能力吗? MIT Media Lab lecture, 2025-01-24
2. Systems(文化实践)vs technological objects(技术物)。 技术物是我们造出来的软硬件容器;systems 是"humans teach each other through culture"(人通过文化互相传授)的过程。
"Cultural practices are inherently malleable; they evolve quickly as people adapt them to their needs. Software, by contrast, is often static — you get what the developer built for you, and the update loop is slow. If we had better end-user programming, software could be as flexible and adaptable as a cultural practice like rhetoric."" MIT Media Lab lecture, 2025-01-24
4. "Inspect the node modules of your life"。
"You shouldn't have to be a programmer all the time, but you should have the right to inspect the 'node modules' of your life when you need to fix or customize your process."" MIT Media Lab lecture, 2025-01-24
她也在这一讲里直面了自己 embodied cognition 立场的现实困境:"our computers aren't 'out here' in the room with us; they are trapped behind a display"(我们的电脑不在房间里和我们一起,它们被困在屏幕后面)——在软件里工作的收益太高,以至于很难为"走出软件"辩护,但一进软件就丢掉了质地、光线、身体运动这些真实世界输入。
"most of these people don't give a shit about programming and don't want to learn it."" Home-Cooked Software and Barefoot Developers
"We are missing standardized, easy-to-use frameworks that handle user authentication, database synchronization, and deployment for non-experts."" localfirst.fm #13
她在 localfirst.fm 的核心论断:
"[01:04:06] We are blinkered by what we think is possible and what we think we are allowed to do in software. We are unblinkering people by showing them that this is not the only way things have to be.""[01:04:06] 我们被'软件里什么可能、什么被允许'的视野所限制。 localfirst.fm #13, 2024-08-13
(Three-Strikes Rule):
"[00:49:11] The three strikes rule: anytime you reference an idea three times, you have to write about it. It forces you to produce consistently when something has crossed the threshold of usefulness.""[00:49:11] 三击规则:任何时候你引用同一个想法三次,你就得写它。 Swyx Mixtape, 2021-02-14
"[00:58:09] You write notes as your past self to add to your present self and prepare for your future self. It is a three-way conversation between versions of yourself.""[00:58:09] 你以过去的自己来写笔记,以补充现在的自己、准备未来的自己。 Swyx Mixtape, 2021-02-14
"[00:22:00] You're talking about redoing your own site and there's so much inertia that gets killed by people, engineers especially, going, 'I'm going to start blogging. Before I do, I need to build this like industrial scale personal site. It's going to have all these features and do all these things.' And then they get halfway through that and abandon it... Or they finish it, they architect the perfect blog. And then they're like, 'here's my first post. Here's how I built this blog.' And that's the only post on the entire site forever.""[00:22:00] 你说要重做自己的网站,无数人——尤其是工程师——的惯性都死在这件事上。' devtools.fm, 2024-04-29
"[00:24:42] Don't put too much in front of your writing, just write.""[00:24:42] 别在你的写作前堆太多东西,直接写。"devtools.fm, 2024-04-29
公开写作的职业飞轮(Dive Club 补充): 她在 Dive Club 上把公开写作对设计师职业的作用讲得比任何地方都直白——写作首先是设计能力本身("Naming a problem and explaining it well to stakeholders is perhaps the most important skill in design" / 给问题命名并向利益相关者讲清楚,也许是设计里最重要的技能),其次才是声誉机制:
"[00:50:16] When you write clearly online, people assume you are far more competent and better at your job than you actually are.""[00:50:16] 当你在网上写得清楚时,人们会假定你远比实际上更能干、更擅长你的工作。"Dive Club Ep. 57, 2024-06-13

- Dive Club — "You're an AI product designer now"(id 2645518, 2025-01-06)— DROP。 实质内容清楚归属于另外几位设计师——George Kedenburg III("AI 是 crash-landed 的 alien space metal / 新材料"、"art of the possible"、"raise the ceiling")与 Kyle Terman("就算模型停在 Claude 3/3.5 也还有数年设计工作要做"),另提及 Anthropic / Humane 的从业者观点与 Genway 这类 AI 用户研究工具。
- Dive Club — "The challenge of designing AI products"(id 4307682, 2025-03-18)— DROP。
