2017 年他用一份 1/16 长度于 Zuckerberg IPO 信的 S-1 letter 把 Snap Inc. 重新定义为 "a camera company";2024 年 9 月在 Snap Partner Summit 上把第五代 Spectacles + Snap OS 摆到台上,比 Meta 的 Orion 早一个 generation;2026 年 4 月裁掉 16% 员工后股价跳涨——15 年里他不断告诉员工和投资人:"we're still investing at a higher rate, even if it means our share price might be lower"(即使股价会更低,我们仍在以更高速度投资)。
I'm obviously mortified and embarrassed... I have no excuse",没有 spin,没有 framing,没有把它讲成成长故事。
如果你只看他的产品作品,他是 Stories(2013 年 10 月)、Discover(2015 年 1 月)、Lenses(2015 年 9 月 Looksery 收购后)、Bitmoji(2016 年 3 月 Bitstrips 收购后)、Snap Map(2017 年 6 月)、Spectacles(V1 2016 / V2 2018 / V3 2019 / V4 2021 / V5 2024)、My AI(2023 年 2 月)的设计 owner。 如果第五代 Specs(2024 年 226 克 / 46° FOV / 无控制器 / Snap OS)真的能在 2026 年成为消费级产品,他将在与 Mark Zuckerberg 的 13 年对峙里第一次进入领先位置。
"Born 1990 in a $2 million Pacific Palisades home — LA enclave near Malibu. Eldest of three children. Both parents Harvard- and Stanford-educated lawyers.""1990 年生于一栋 200 万美元的 Pacific Palisades 住宅——洛杉矶靠近 Malibu 的一处飞地。 South China Morning Post, 2024
"Built his own computer in 6th grade — which gave him conviction that complex systems are buildable."" Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett, 2025-03-24(采访者复述)
"My parents prohibited TV but bought any book I wanted — credits this for cultivating imagination."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24(采访者复述)
Otis College of Art and Design 修高中并行的设计课;Stanford 入学前的暑假在 Pasadena 的 Art Center College of Design 上课;高中里在 Red Bull 做无薪营销实习。
"His father called him a contrarian; he was 'not confident in himself but confident in his ideas."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24(采访者复述 + Spiegel 自述)
Spiegel 在 Diary of a CEO 里把这个项目描述为"在教 systematic ideation":
"Studied product design at Stanford, a program he describes as visionary in teaching empathy-driven systematic ideation."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24(采访者复述)
"We didn't love the product enough. If you really love the product and what you're building, you can fight through anything."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"F–k Bitches Get Leid [sic]""操女人 / 上女人 [原文如此]"Spiegel email subject/header, ~2009-2010
"3 kegs, 5 [boxes of] plastic shot glasses, 1 ounce of marijuana, 1 kilo of blow (cocaine)""3 桶啤酒,5 [盒] 塑料 shot 杯,1 盎司大麻,1 公斤可卡因。"From a party "shopping list" email
"I'll roll a blunt for whoever sees the most [breasts] tonight."" Another email
How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars
"I wish I could send disappearing photos."" Reggie Brown, dorm room, spring 2011
Spiegel
"That's a million-dollar idea!""
两人当晚把 Bobby Murphy(Spiegel 的 Future Freshman 联合创始人、Stanford 数学计算专业 2010 届毕业生、Kappa Sigma 兄弟)拉进来负责工程。
Spiegel 离开 Stanford 全职做 Snapchat(直到 2018 年才回去补完学分毕业)。
Reggie Brown
Snapchat
"We were waiting for our venture investors, Lightspeed, to fund us. I was sitting in the back of a class, refreshing the Wells Fargo app, and when I saw the $485,000 hit, I walked up to my teacher, Craig, and told him I had to drop the class."" The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [Q1]
Reggie Brown
"We acknowledge Reggie's contribution to the creation of Snapchat and appreciate his work in getting the application off the ground."" Spiegel statement, 2014
"Brown developed the concept in spring 2011 during a fraternity conversation about sexting... Spiegel wasn't even part of the convo at the idea's inception... Brown allegedly presented it to Spiegel, who responded by repeatedly exclaiming that Brown had indeed conceived of a 'million-dollar idea.""Brown TechCrunch, 2017-02-02
Facebook
"Bobby and I just loved what we were doing. We loved what we were working on, and we believed in the future of it.""Bobby Spiegel, on Facebook offer
"There are very few people in the world who get to build a business like this. I think trading that for some short-term gain isn't very interesting."" Spiegel, on Facebook offer
"We each got $10 million bucks. Let's go for it."" Spiegel, on the secondary cushion
"There was never a moment of doubt."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
Snap 当时还有一份据传被 Sony Pictures 邮件泄露的细节:董事 Michael Lynton 给 Malcolm Gladwell 写邮件说,真实 offer 比公开报道的 30 亿美元高得多——他打趣"如果你知道真实数字,you would book us all a suite at Bellevue"(你会把我们全部送进精神病院)。
"Don't feel bad if you sell out. Just don't stop there. Find something you aren't willing to sell."" USC Marshall Commencement, 2015-05-15
Zuckerberg 给 Spiegel 上的"Art of War"一课
"Evan gets his whole team a copy of The Art of War. They all read it.""Evan Acquired Episode 12, 2016-05-23(主持人叙述)
"Any discussion of... well, we have problem X and we need to do thing Y and so we should just look at what other people have done on that... That'll get you fired right away."" Acquired Episode 12, 2016-05-23
Stories,tagline "It's about time"——一个 24 小时按时间顺序的 snap feed。
"Listening is for inspiration; building is for empathy."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
"This is evidence that we're on the right path. We're building products people love, and they're getting the attention of the biggest companies."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"I'm obviously mortified and embarrassed that my idiotic emails during my fraternity days were made public. I have no excuse. I'm sorry I wrote them at the time and I was a jerk to have written them. They in no way reflect who I am today or my views towards women."" Spiegel, May 2014
Spectacles V1
- 2015 年 1 月 27 日:Discover 上线,11 家媒体合作伙伴入驻——CNN、Comedy Central、Cosmopolitan、Daily Mail、ESPN、Food Network、National Geographic、People、Vice、Yahoo、Warner Music。
- 2016 年 9 月 24 日:公司更名 Snap Inc.;首次发布 Spectacles V1(Karl Lagerfeld 拍摄 Spiegel 戴眼镜的发布照片)。
S-1 letter
"Snap Inc. is a camera company.""Snap Inc. 是一家相机公司。"S-1 founder letter, 2017-02-02
"We believe that reinventing the camera represents our greatest opportunity to improve the way that people live and communicate."" S-1 letter
"In the way that the flashing cursor became the starting point for most products on desktop computers, we believe that the camera screen will be the starting point for most products on smartphones."" S-1 letter
"Images created by smartphone cameras contain more context and richer information than other forms of input like text entered on a keyboard. This is why we are willing to take risks in an attempt to create innovative and different camera products that are better able to reflect and improve our life experiences."" S-1 letter
这个 framing 后来被 Snap 在 2018 年的 founder letter 重新强调("We are a camera company")、在 2024 年 Snap Partner Summit 重新展开(Specs V5 + Snap OS)、在 2025 年的 14 周年信里再次锚定。
Snap IPO @ $24B
Class B(pre-IPO 投资人)= 1 票/股。
"Tencent very early on understood the power of communication because it drives frequency. If you can be the service that's most frequently used on someone's phone, you're able to develop a lot of other ancillary businesses around that engagement.""Tencent
"sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me… ugh this is so sad.""soo 还有谁不再打开 Snapchat 了吗? Kylie Jenner, 2018-02-21
"Even the complaints we're seeing reinforce the philosophy. Even the frustrations we're seeing really validate those changes."" Spiegel, Goldman Sachs, 2018-02-15
"I feel way more attached to the service.""
"We rushed our redesign, solving one problem but creating many others."" Spiegel internal memo, 2018-09-26
其中"Chat is King"是 thesis:
"We have lost the core of what made Snapchat the fastest way to communicate."" Spiegel memo, 2018-09-26
Instagram Stories(2016
Spiegel 多年后在 Diary of a CEO 给出他的判断:
"Snap and Instagram serve different users (close friends vs. influencers/creators); biggest companies copying you confirms you're on the right path.""Snap 和 Instagram 服务不同的用户(亲密朋友 vs. influencer / 创作者);最大的公司复制你,证明你走在正确的路上。"Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24(Spiegel 自述)
- Imran Khan(CSO,
- Drew Vollero(首位 CFO)。
- Steve LaBella(VP of Marketing)。
- Tim Stone(CFO,2018 年 5 月入职,2019 年 1 月 16 日辞职——SNAP 当日跌 14%)。
Recode 的 headline 是 "Snap's Evan Spiegel keeps losing his top executives"。 这一波离职浪潮配合 Pompliano 诉讼(Anthony Pompliano 2017 年 1 月起诉,主张 Spiegel 曾说过 "this app is only for rich people"——只为富人服务)一起,构成了关于 Spiegel 领导风格最持久的批评叙事。
Michael Tubbs(2018, 2020)
"[Spiegel was] one of Tubbs' closest friends.""[Spiegel 是] Tubbs 最亲近的朋友之一。"CNBC, 2020-07-15
Otis College
Otis College of Art and Design 授予 Spiegel 名誉博士学位。
"When we talk about AR, we're trying to augment the real world around you. So our fundamental bet is that people actually love the real world."" Spiegel, 2022 (anti-metaverse stance)
- 2017–2024 三个亲生儿子加一个继子:Flynn(Kerr 与 Orlando Bloom 之子,2013 年生)、Hart(2018)、Myles(2019)、Pierre Kerr Spiegel(2024 年 2 月 27 日生)。
- Diary of a CEO 上他形容 Miranda Kerr 是"a supportive entrepreneurial partner with her own wellness business",并 mention 每周一次的 "family day"。
Kriya
Council 实践
来自他 Crossroads 中学时代的 "Council"——围圈而坐、from the heart 说话、from the heart 倾听、保持 spontaneous——被他在 Snap 内部正式引入为领导仪式:
"Adopted the 'Council' practice (sit-in-circle, speak/listen from the heart) from his middle school as a formal Snap leadership ritual."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24(采访者复述)
核心问题是 Snap 最初的 DPIA(Data Protection Impact Assessment)没有充分评估 13–17 岁用户面对 GenAI 的特殊风险。
Pinsent Masons 把这件事描述为 "blueprint for regulator engagement on AI"。
美国参议院司法委员会的 "Big Tech and the Online Child Sexual Exploitation Crisis" 听证会,Spiegel 与 Meta、X、Discord、TikTok 的 CEO 一起出席。
"Words cannot begin to express the profound sorrow I feel that a service we designed to bring people happiness and joy has been abused to cause harm."" Spiegel, Senate testimony, 2024-01-31
"I'm so sorry that we have not been able to prevent these tragedies."" Spiegel, to families whose children died
"We will be honest about our shortcomings, and we will work continuously to improve."" Spiegel, Senate testimony, 2024-01-31
- 2024 年 9 月 12 日:Jim Lanzone(前 Yahoo CEO)加入董事会。
"We feel incredibly fortunate to serve over 850 million Snapchatters around the world, including the 100 million who have joined us since our last Partner Summit."" Spiegel, Snap Partner Summit, 2024-09-17
"I think glasses allow us to use computing grounded in the real world, together with our friends, and in a much more natural way."" Spiegel to Axios, 2024-09
Spiegel 在 14 周年信里(2025 年发布)把 Snap 描述为 "squeezed between the tech giants and smaller competitors, on the verge of greatness"——夹在巨头与更小竞争者之间,在伟大的边缘。
"[Snap is] squeezed between the tech giants and smaller competitors, on the verge of greatness.""[Snap] 被夹在科技巨头和更小的竞争者之间,处在伟大的边缘。"14-year letter, 2025
- Gross margins:
- Growth:1 billion MAU
- Cultural:kind, smart, creative。
"Loving husband, father of four boys, VP Product @ Meta."" Spiegel LinkedIn, 2025-02
"[The goal is] to design something that is so simple and so elegant that the only thing competitors can do is copy it exactly.""[目标是] 设计一种如此简单、如此优雅的东西,让竞争者唯一能做的就是逐字复制它。"Spiegel, 2018
"We would really appreciate it if they would copy our data protection practices also."" Spiegel, 2018
CFR Bernard L. Schwartz Lecture
"I don't think there's going to be an extinction event."" Spiegel, CFR, 2025-09-17
Spiegel, CFR, 2025-09-17
"We are in an unbelievable race in terms of advanced technology with other countries, like China."" Spiegel, CFR, 2025-09-17
"Unless people feel supported in the workplace, that they can show up and bring wild ideas and be their full self and not be afraid, you know, of failing, it's incredibly hard to be creative."" Spiegel, CFR, 2025-09-17
2025 年:Cheeky Pint 上的"smartphone era is ending"
"Phones have continued that trend of pulling people into the screen rather than bringing people into the world."" Cheeky Pint, 2025
"Glasses become so obvious. They're already worn by billions of people. They sit right in front of your eyes."" Cheeky Pint, 2025
"More than two-thirds of new code is written by AI at Snap.""Snap 超过三分之二的新代码由 AI 编写。"Cheeky Pint, 2025
"Computing needs to be in the service of humanity, that ultimately, humans are the ones that decide how technology is adopted."" Cheeky Pint, 2025
- 营收 17.2 亿美元(+10% YoY);
- 全球 DAU 4.74 亿;MAU 9.46 亿(+6% YoY);
- ARPU $3.62;Gross margin 59%;
- 订阅用户 2400 万(+71% YoY)——Snapchat+ 增长继续;
- 宣布 5 亿美元股票回购;
- 宣布 "Specs Inc." 全资子公司——专门做 AR 眼镜的开发与营销:"graduating from the R&D phase of Specs to broader consumer adoption"。
"[Q4 results] began to reflect the impact of our strategic pivot toward profitable growth, translating into revenue diversification and meaningful margin expansion.""[Q4 业绩] 开始反映我们向 profitable growth 战略转型的影响,体现在营收多样化和有意义的 margin 扩张。"Spiegel, Q4 2025 earnings call
"[Snap is at] a crucible moment.""[Snap 处在] 一个 crucible(炼狱 / 决定性)时刻。"Spiegel layoff memo, 2026-04-15
"[We need] a new way of working that is faster and more efficient, while pivoting towards profitable growth.""[我们需要] 一种更快、更高效、同时向 profitable growth 转型的新工作方式。"Spiegel, 2026-04-15
"Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence enable our teams to reduce repetitive work, increase velocity.""AI 的快速进步让我们的团队减少重复性工作、提高速度。"Spiegel, 2026-04-15
"I think technology leaders think that folks will just blindly adopt new technology as it comes out."" Fortune, 2026-05
"We're going to enter a period of time where there's going to be a huge amount of societal pushback on a lot of the changes that are coming with AI."" Fortune, 2026-05
"Humanity is far more important than the technological developments largely because humanity dictates how technology is adopted."" Fortune, 2026-05
"On the one hand, this is really dangerous… and we need people to know this because this is happening and moving quickly. On the other hand, how do you not just freak everyone out?""
In Good Company(Nicolai Tangen)访谈
"Privacy is the foundation of self-expression. Unless you feel like you can express yourself without fear of being recorded and broadcast publicly, it is hard to feel comfortable."" In Good Company with Nicolai Tangen, 2026-06-03 [00:03:27]
"If you want to create long-term value, you must do difficult things and solve difficult problems."" In Good Company with Nicolai Tangen, 2026-06-03 [00:13:35]
2026 年 6 月 16 日:AWE 2026 keynote "Making Computing More Human" — 消费 Specs 正式发布
Lenses
"Snap Inc. is a camera company.""Snap Inc. 是一家相机公司。"S-1 founder letter, 2017-02-02
"In the way that the flashing cursor became the starting point for most products on desktop computers, we believe that the camera screen will be the starting point for most products on smartphones."" S-1 letter
"Design is really about empathizing with your customer and building something that resonates with them."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
2025 年 11 月他在 The Circuit 上对"design-first"这个标签做了一次重要的自我修正:Snap 不是"纯 design-first",而是 design 与 engineering 的交叉点——这个模型来自 Spiegel(design-first 但欣赏 engineering)与 Bobby Murphy(engineering-first 但欣赏 design)两人之间的关系。
"I wouldn't call it purely 'design-first.' It is modeled on the relationship between myself and Bobby. He is engineering-first but appreciates design, and I am design-first but appreciate engineering. We found that innovation lives at the intersection of those two disciplines."" 他是 engineering-first 但欣赏 design,我是 design-first 但欣赏 engineering。 The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [Q2]
"Because we were founded without public likes and comments, we reduced the pressure to be 'pretty and perfect,' which encourages a more unvarnished, behind-the-scenes, and authentic style of content that reduces the burden of content creation."" Squawk Pod (CNBC), 2024-09-21 [Q4]
"Thinking you are special is dangerous because it puts distance between you and your customer. If you think you are special, you stop empathizing, you stop connecting, and you stop innovating."" The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [00:49:21]
"That's what makes design different than art. Art is me expressing myself. But design is really expressing a point of view or expressing an idea or trying to provide a service. Design really has an objective in a way that art doesn't necessarily."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:46:31]
"What is really the purpose of whatever it is that we're making? If I can understand that very, very clearly, the design almost reveals itself from there. It becomes obvious."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:47:04]
"Their fundamental thesis is that everyone is creative, but it is suppressed by fear and by the events you go through as you get older... rather than waiting for lightning to strike or the apple to fall out of the tree and bop you on the head, what we think is most important is that you have a repeatable process to be creative."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:32:54]
2. 产品哲学 — distribution as moat、software is not a moat
"So much of consumer technology focuses on product-market fit. People don't spend nearly enough time thinking about distribution."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
"15 years ago, we learned that software is not a moat, which is something everyone is discovering today with AI.""15 年前我们学到 software 不是护城河,这件事今天每个人都在 AI 上发现。"Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
"There is no moat in software."" Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"What really mattered was connecting you to the right people. If you connect someone to their best friend, their partner, or their spouse, that is where the majority of the value is in the network."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
- Volume of ideas > one perfect idea:
- Premium-first hardware → mass market:先服务 passionate early adopters,再 scale down。
"Listening is for inspiration; building is for empathy."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
"If you want to have a good idea, you have to have lots of ideas."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
"I think it's a generation of realists... millennials still retain that optimism, but it's been shaped by reality. I think Gen Z grew up in that reality."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:03:17]
"The internet actually allowed Millennials to, in many ways, leapfrog Gen X... There's probably no better technology to accelerate learning than AI and I think it's arriving at such an interesting and critical time for Gen Alpha when they're in that phase of just extraordinary learning and growth."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:08:18 / 00:09:39]
Edwin Land 的方法论被 Spiegel 提炼为:"visualize the final product, then force the technology to be invented to enable it"——先画出最终产品,再 force 技术被发明出来支持它。
"Instead of chasing technology, be crystal clear about what you are trying to create and then organize everyone to invent everything needed to create that product."" Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"Snapchat isn't just an app; it's the engine that enables us to build the future of human-computer interaction.""Snapchat 不只是一个应用——它是让我们构建人机交互未来的引擎。"Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"We're still investing at a higher rate, even if it means our share price might be lower."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"Most decisions aren't existential; the important thing is to make a decision and then fix it if you're wrong."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"How much people care about what they do and the ability to move quickly is the predictor of success."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"If you're not going after something that could reach billions of people, it's not that interesting."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"We didn't love the product enough. If you really love the product and what you're building, you can fight through anything."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"Get really good at saying no" — 他自认公司命运里最大的单条建议(2020 回溯):2020 年在 How Leaders Lead 上,Spiegel 说公司生命里"可能最大的分水岭"是早期(团队还只有 4 个人、在他父亲家里办公时)一位他敬重的投资人给的一条建议——学会说不。 这条纪律是他后来"focus on the core fundamentals"资源观的起点。
"He said, Evan, you need to get really good at saying no... And the fact that he gave me permission to say no when I think all of us, because we're human, we want to help other people... having that permission to say, No, I'm sorry, I really need to focus on the core things that are fundamental to our business. That permission early on made a massive difference for us."" How Leaders Lead with David Novak, 2020-07-30 [00:47:51–00:48:33]
"The biggest mistakes I've made have always been when I haven't gotten ahead of the growth of the company. And that's usually where I have to spend the most time cleaning up... I'm now constantly thinking about that and paranoid about what do we need to change now so that we're ready for the future?""
"There is a big difference between kind and nice. Nice is about making people feel good; kind is about wanting the best for them.""kind 和 nice 之间有巨大差别。 Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"Kindness is the essential ingredient if you want a creative culture. We always differentiate between kind and nice."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"[Snapchat values being] kind, smart, and creative.""[Snapchat 的价值观是] kind, smart, creative。"Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"Unless people feel supported in the workplace, that they can show up and bring wild ideas and be their full self and not be afraid of failing, it's incredibly hard to be creative."" CFR, 2025-09-17
"I think creativity is really the X factor, certainly in the age of AI."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas. The most toxic thing you can have is people attached to an idea."" Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"Ideas are not the scarce resource at Snap. The scarce resource is our ability to execute and engineering and things like that. And so I think you just have to resist the urge to treat ideas as something precious and instead really focus on driving high quality execution and keep innovating."" How Leaders Lead with David Novak, 2020-07-30 [00:28:25–00:28:32]
- Council 圆圈对话:从 Crossroads 中学的实践引入为 Snap 的领导仪式;speak from the heart, listen from the heart, be spontaneous。
- "In It to Win It" meeting:从 Walmart 借鉴;surfacing cross-org problems before they're solved in only one silo。
- Weekly red/yellow/green deep dive:CEO 主持的 risk-and-dependency 跟踪。
- T-shaped leadership:Spiegel 自评深 in vision/innovation/product, 浅 in HR/legal/finance;deliberately surrounds himself with specialists。
- 走动式管理(MBWA)避免"盲点":Spiegel 说只看文档和 presentation 会带来盲点,所以他刻意在办公室里走动、直接和人聊——"that is where I learn the most critical information"(那才是我学到最关键信息的地方)。 (Bloomberg "Snap on AI & Product Innovation",2024-05-10 [Q4])
"Don't worry about losing. Think about winning. Even when you have a loss, you must ask yourself, 'What is good about this? How can I turn a defeat into something that works for us?""
"It is easy to get frustrated or blame external circumstances... However, the lesson is that you must find a path to win regardless of the setbacks. My role is to energize and rally the team around that path rather than dwelling on the loss."" Squawk Pod (CNBC), 2024-09-21 [Q2]
"You know, understanding problems is really just asking a lot of questions. And I'm not afraid to ask dumb questions. I mean, the vast majority of all the questions I ask are really dumb. And I think that's what really helps me understand what the problem actually is."" How Leaders Lead with David Novak, 2020-07-30 [00:26:05–00:26:19]
"I really believed when I was just getting started that if two really experienced leaders came to me with a conflict, my job was actually to say, well, you two should figure that out... But what I wasn't realizing was that they were bringing it to me. They'd already tried maybe a couple times. And so actually, my role was to help them solve it and help make that decision."" How Leaders Lead with David Novak, 2020-07-30 [00:45:59–00:46:23]
5. AI 与 AR 战略 — 12 年视野、p(doom) 低、humanity-first
"I don't think there's going to be an extinction event.""
CFR, 2025-09-17
"Humanity is far more important than the technological developments largely because humanity dictates how technology is adopted."" Fortune, 2026-05
"I think technology leaders think that folks will just blindly adopt new technology as it comes out. We're going to enter a period of time where there's going to be a huge amount of societal pushback on a lot of the changes that are coming with AI."" Fortune, 2026-05
"Computing needs to be in the service of humanity, that ultimately, humans are the ones that decide how technology is adopted."" Cheeky Pint, 2025
"Phones have continued that trend of pulling people into the screen rather than bringing people into the world."" Cheeky Pint, 2025
"Glasses become so obvious. They're already worn by billions of people. They sit right in front of your eyes."" Cheeky Pint, 2025
"We are building a new type of computer that fits into our lives rather than removing us from them."" Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
"When we talk about AR, we're trying to augment the real world around you. So our fundamental bet is that people actually love the real world."" Spiegel on banning "metaverse," April 2022
"Hardware and software require fundamentally different execution styles."" Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"Controlling the hardware is a necessity to deliver an extraordinary customer experience."" Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"Many companies in this space have treated AR as a side project, turning initiatives on and off or pivoting between consumer and enterprise markets, which is destructive to R&D. We have invested consistently for over 12 years against a single vision."" In Good Company with Nicolai Tangen, 2026-06-03(QA digest 近原话)
"Rather than just trying to build the biggest model, we distill advanced image, video, and 3D models to run directly on the user's device for free. This allows hundreds of millions of people to use advanced AI tools that might cost $10–$20 a month on other platforms."" The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [Q5]
"Glasses can provide a display area equivalent to 400 times a smartphone at a fraction of the weight, without requiring your hands. Eventually, people will wonder why we ever carried around separate tablets, TVs, and watches."" The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [Q6]
"We're still investing at a higher rate, even if it means our share price might be lower."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"We don't provide a 'clean quarter' for investors. We take the cash flows from our core Snapchat business and reinvest them into the future. I draw inspiration from Jensen Huang at NVIDIA, who similarly had to endure long periods of skepticism while reinvesting his CUDA revenue into the GPU business."" The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [Q7]
- Reads voraciously instead of consuming TV:童年家规延续到成年。 How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars(关于他自己的)、Zero to One(Thiel)、Edwin Land 传记、Loonshots(Safi Bahcall)、The First 50 Years of Apple(David Pogue)、The End of the World is Just the Beginning(Peter Zeihan)、Sun Tzu Art of War(Zuckerberg 会议后给全队读)、Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell into Tyranny(2019 夏)、Milan Kundera The Unbearable Lightness of Being(最爱)。
他相信美国正站在一个"new era of American abundance"的临界点。 (Summit23 Fireside Chat,2023-09-29 [Q8])
(Tiger Sisters,2026-05-25 [01:05:27])
- Family day:每周一次家庭日,Miranda Kerr 是"supportive entrepreneurial partner with her own wellness business"。
- "Confident in ideas, not in self":父亲称他为 contrarian;他自我描述"对自己没信心,但对自己的想法有信心"。
"I wasn't confident in myself, but I was confident in my ideas."" Diary of a CEO, 2025-03-24
"Computers have pulled us away from one another, away from society, into this single-player mode."" Founders (Senra), 2026-04-12
"Energy is the foundation for everything we touch, and if we can achieve breakthrough innovations that make energy nearly free and widely available, the secondary innovations that will emerge will be extraordinary... I believe we are on the cusp of a new era of American abundance."" Summit23 Fireside Chat, 2023-09-29(QA digest 近原话)[Q8]
"[The goal is] to design something that is so simple and so elegant that the only thing competitors can do is copy it exactly.""[目标是] 设计一种如此简单、如此优雅的东西,让竞争者唯一能做的就是逐字复制它。"Spiegel, 2018
"We would really appreciate it if they would copy our data protection practices also.""
- 四个儿子:Flynn(继子,Kerr 与 Orlando Bloom 之子)、Hart(2018)、Myles(2019)、Pierre(2024)。
- Otis College
"She was like, 'hey, I'm just kind of figuring it out.' And I was like, 'that's cool, but I'm actually looking for something serious. So if you're not interested in that, then this isn't the right fit for me."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:44:37]
"The more people skip the games and get straight to actually what they're looking for, what's important to them, and can communicate that in a loving and positive way, I think that forms the foundation of a strong relationship."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:45:09]
"More than two-thirds of new code is written by AI at Snap.""Snap 超过三分之二的新代码由 AI 编写。"Cheeky Pint, 2025; Fortune, 2026-05
"Snap called AI 'probably the best thing that's ever happened' to the company.""Spiegel 把 AI 称为 Snap '可能是发生过最好的事情'。"Fortune, 2026-05
"AI agents can effectively flatten organizational structures.""AI agents 可以有效地扁平化组织结构。"Lenny's Podcast, 2026-04-26
到 2026 年 6 月,这个判断有了时间线和量化版本:他在 In Good Company 上说过去约六个月 Snap 已从"AI 工具"切换到 agentic development,并预计 AI 接管管理行政工作(peer feedback 收集、进度监控、career planning)后,管理者 span of control 可能翻倍——"it frees up leaders to actually lead"(让领导者真正去领导)。
"We are moving from AI being a tool that engineers use to 'agentic development,' where developers oversee agents who complete the work."" In Good Company with Nicolai Tangen, 2026-06-03(QA digest 近原话)
Founders (Senra) summary
"On the one hand, this is really dangerous… and we need people to know this. On the other hand, how do you not just freak everyone out?""
"Intelligence is being democratized in a pretty radical way. Everyone in the world is going to have access to incredible levels of intelligence, far higher than average intelligence."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [01:03:26]
"EQ and the ability to work with other people is almost like the most important differentiator in terms of being able to do hard and interesting things.""EQ 和与他人协作的能力,几乎是能否做成困难而有趣的事情的最重要的差异化因素。"Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [01:04:13]
"We have to abandon the notion that if we protect aspects of our democratic or capitalist systems, we are compromising on the notion of having a free and open society. In many cases, it will be protecting it."" Summit23 Fireside Chat, 2023-09-29 [00:08:45]
"Comprehensive federal privacy regulation... actually help[s] accelerate innovation by providing a clear, stable environment. Europe's approach with GDPR and the Digital Services Act has provided a solid foundation that gives businesses more flexibility to explore AI."" Summit23 Fireside Chat, 2023-09-29(QA digest 近原话)[Q5]
这套政策观最早的系统性表述在 2020 年——"通信 vs 广播"的二分监管框架:在 How Leaders Lead(2020-07-30,早于 Summit23 三年、早于 Senate 听证四年)上,Spiegel 说自己花大量时间研究媒体监管史,并给出他的核心分析框架:美国监管史一直把 communication(私人对话——受保护,政府窃听需要 warrant,"你可以对朋友说完全疯狂和不合适的话")与 broadcast(广播——触达百万人是特权,受更高标准约束、由独立监管机构管辖)二分处理,而互联网史无前例地让任何个人可以向数百万人广播——所以对广播级言论设立准则是合理的,哪怕这动摇的正是社交媒体的商业模式。
"We've really bifurcated communication from broadcast media... The challenge it poses for the internet looking forward is that never before in our history have we allowed any individual person in this country to broadcast whatever they want to millions and millions and millions of people. And that, in my opinion, is a tremendous privilege... I think it is reasonable that we have guidelines around what is and is not acceptable when we're broadcasting things."" How Leaders Lead with David Novak, 2020-07-30 [00:29:24–00:30:48]
"What we've said actually is that the First Amendment is designed to protect individual citizens and businesses from the government... And so what I think is fascinating is the First Amendment right actually protects platforms like Snap or like Facebook or Twitter to make whatever decisions they'd like to make about the sorts of content that are on their platforms."" How Leaders Lead with David Novak, 2020-07-30 [00:31:25–00:31:48]
"Rather than arbitrary bans... you have to double opt-in to a conversation... not having a public friends list on Snapchat makes it much harder for people to figure out who someone's friends with or otherwise bully them... When social media is used in moderation, the research actually shows it's correlated with overall well-being."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [00:13:39–00:15:12]
"Our budget window is a 10 year budget window... any meaningful long term investment, and the most obvious one is investments in young people, look negative in 10 years... over 30 years, the returns on those investments are so profitable. There's no more profitable investment really that our government can make than in young people."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [01:07:48–01:08:18]
"Who better to invest than the government, which is basically a legal monopoly in our country? They're so well positioned to invest long term, but none of the incentives are set up around that."" Tiger Sisters, 2026-05-25 [01:09:12]
A. Edwin Land 影响线(Polaroid 相机思维 → Snap "camera company")
Founders (Senra)、Diary of a CEO Snap "is a camera company" 的 framing 不是修辞——它是 Spiegel 在 S-1 letter 里把 Land 的工作哲学公开宣示给资本市场。 Robert Cornelius,"the photographer credited with taking the first-ever selfie in 1839"。
C. Reggie Brown
I wish I could send disappearing photos"是 Snapchat 的最初 spark——这件事 TechCrunch 2017 年在 S-1 披露后正式承认。 Council 仪式(speak from the heart)的引入也可以读成"对当年那种执行式 founder 决策的 reframe"。
(V1 2016 → V5 2024 → consumer 2026)
Snapchat isn't just an app; it's the engine that enables us to build the future of human-computer interaction"——这句话的 corporate finance translation 是:广告业务的现金流补贴 AR 月球射,零投票权结构保护这个补贴免受公开市场短期主义干预。
Reframe stress as opportunity、reframe
(Stories vs Reels vs Specs vs Orion)
Spiegel 在 Diary of a CEO 上把这条 13 年对峙总结为 "biggest companies copying you confirms you're on the right path"——但这个 reframe 没有完全 mask 掉一个事实:Stories 被复制的 4 年里 Snap 的增长曲线明显被 dilute 了。
这条曲线在 Spiegel 个人净资产层面是 $13.8B(2021)→ $2.5B(2025),下跌 82%。
H. AI 时代的 Snap(My AI 失败 + code-gen 成功)
Spiegel 的回应短而无 spin:"I'm obviously mortified and embarrassed... I have no excuse"。
Anthony Pompliano 2017 年 1 月起诉 Snap,主张 Spiegel 曾说过 "this app is only for rich people"——讨论是否扩展到"印度和西班牙这些穷国"时。
这些批评线索的共同 frame 是:Spiegel 的"vision over user feedback / vision over user pressure / vision over employee stability"作为风格不仅有上行回报(坚持 camera company / 坚持 AR)也有下行成本(My AI 监管 / Senate 听证 / 高管离职潮)。
"We treat safety with the same, if not more, urgency as product growth. Because we are a messaging service, we are often on the front lines of emerging challenges."" The Circuit with Emily Chang, 2025-11-08 [Q8]

- 专有名词保留英文(Snap、Spectacles、Crossroads、Pacific Palisades、Stanford、Munger Tolles、Kriya、Council、Edwin Land、Polaroid、My AI、Specs Inc.、Snapchat+)。
