他在 Twitter 担任 VP Corporate Strategy,同时管理 Geo、Search 与 M&A。
除此之外他在做一系列文明级别的项目——Alexandria(用 AI 把 1,000 本最重要的非版权书翻译成数十种语言并制作有声书)、Monumental(建造大型公共纪念碑)、以及一所灵感来自古希腊的 K-12 学校。
"There's lots of evidence that aging is a program that you can perturb."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"There's theories, but I don't know which theory is right. And the other piece of information that we have is that we know that there's certain drugs that will extend lifespan in multiple organisms. Rapamycin would be an example where mice will live 10 to 30% longer."" My First Million, 2024
1.2 Salk Institute:
"CRISPR is overfocused on the gene-editing side. The targeting, immune response, and cell coverage are the real unsolved problems in gene therapy.""CRISPR My First Million, 2024
"I had an existential crisis at age 16 about not having done enough.""
"Fundamentally, 'made it' could mean the impact you're having on the world. It could mean what you've built or done that's important or relevant.""
"I observed simultaneous discoveries across research groups, and concluded individual academic impact was limited."" Alejandro Cremades Bio
"Regrets not skipping his PhD and moving to Silicon Valley earlier."" First Text, 2019(主持人转述)
"I think one of the things that the science training did was force a level of rigor in how you think about things."" Invest Like the Best, 2018

"I joined a Sequoia/Matrix-backed company at the peak. The company contracted from 160 to about 12 employees. After my termination, I volunteered at two startups unpaid, then joined Plaxo."" Alejandro Cremades Bio
"I've seen great people get absolutely crushed by bad markets. And I've seen pretty mediocre people do extremely well in a very good market."" Alejandro Cremades Bio
"I saw great people crushed by terrible markets and I've seen reasonably mediocre people do really well."" My First Million, 2024 / This Week in Startups, 2025
"Especially early in your career, don't worry about the role or the compensation; just go to the right company. That will solidify your career for the next decade."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"Choose a role in a rapidly growing market over anything else, because markets accelerate careers at the rate at which the market itself is growing."" First Text, 2019
Sean Parker
"Joined Plaxo (co-founded by Sean Parker).""随后加入了 Plaxo(由 Sean Parker 联合创立)。"Alejandro Cremades Bio
"Silicon Valley career built on many small acts of kindness from the community."" Invest Like the Best, 2018(biographical fact)
这些"small acts of kindness"让他后来在做天使投资时也用同样的方式对待创业者——他自己直接说"as an investor, you do very little to impact the success of a company. It is the founders who do everything."(First Text 2019)。
Plaxo
Solo GP
Alejandro Cremades Bio; First Text (2019)
"Joined Google at ~1,500 people, left at 15,000. Started/helped establish the mobile division. Original PM for Google Mobile Maps and Mobile Gmail (used by hundreds of millions monthly). Participated in 3 acquisitions including Android."" Multiple sources / Alejandro Cremades Bio
3.2 Android
"Recommended handset development via open-source software ecosystems over carrier partnerships—presaging Android."" Multiple sources
"Google hired extremely well (8 interviews per person) but was poor at firing; Facebook was less good at hiring but effective at letting go.""Google 招人非常严格(每个候选人 8 轮面试),但开除人做得很差;Facebook 不那么严苛地筛人,但敢果断地让员工离开。"First Text, 2019
"There is an old saying that people either hire well or fire well. If you at least do one of those, you can build a good organization."" Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
"Massive companies rarely grow purely organically—they employ aggressive distribution strategies from earliest stages (Google buying toolbar bundling)."" First Text (2019) / YC Podcast (2018)
"Previously roughly all machine learning startups failed because prior capabilities lacked sufficient advancement."" Blog: Early Days of AI
3.5 Project Maven
"If the big technology players are running away from defense, this huge category, that means there's an opportunity for a new technology company in defense."" This Week in Startups, 2025 / My First Million, 2024
- 决策: 在 Google 内部推动 "via open-source software ecosystems over carrier partnerships"
Multiple sources on Google mobile / Android era
"Started organically as peers sought advice. Early investments consumed ~half personal net worth."" Alejandro Cremades Bio
"It takes the same amount of effort to invest in small things as it does in big things. You may as well focus on the big things."" First Text, 2019(引用 Reid Hoffman)
4.2 Mixer Labs:location-based developer infra
"Co-founded Mixer Labs (Sequoia + Reid Hoffman backing). Discovered market was smaller than anticipated. Acquired by Twitter for ~$5M. At acquisition, his team would represent ~10% of Twitter's ~90 employees.""联合创立了 Mixer Labs(Sequoia 和 Reid Hoffman 投资)。 Alejandro Cremades Bio
"Many founders view exits as failures, wasting years of talent's creative lives. Landing a company somewhere—even via acqui-hire—is better for employees and founder reputation; establishes track record for future ventures. Selling first company, even small, signals capability and makes second attempt easier to fund."" World of DaaS, 2023(合并paraphrase)
"Grew from 90 to 1,500+ employees in 2 years. VP Corporate Strategy, also ran Geo, Search, M&A.""Twitter 我担任 VP Corporate Strategy,同时管理 Geo、Search 和 M&A。"Alejandro Cremades Bio
"Company hired too many junior candidates who lacked time to develop amid exponential growth. Cultural emphasis on humility inadvertently screened against self-confident engineers needed for rapid scaling."" Alejandro Cremades Bio
这是他后来反复在 High Growth Handbook 中强调的一个核心点:you should hire 12-18 months ahead of company size——因为公司每 12-18 个月会变成一家不同的公司,你今天招的人是为 18 个月后的公司服务的。
"When you are hiring, you are only hiring 12 to 18 months ahead of where the company is. Because if a company is growing rapidly, every 12 to 18 months it is a different company."" First Text, 2019
"We're not a family. We're a team and we focus on performance."" Alejandro Cremades Bio(引用 Shopify 风格的表述)
"CEOs often confuse popularity with leadership. You need to be a leader; you don't need to be popular.""CEO The Peel, 2024
"True leadership prioritizes long-term company health over employee popularity."" The Peel, 2024
"I simply asked the CEO what the company needed me to do."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"Self-sacrificing drive—prioritizing organizational needs over personal career advancement—is the most important trait for scaling."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"If you have to do a layoff, it is much better to do the deep one up front. Culture gets hurt when people have uncertainty and instability."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"It is better to overcut and then rehire than to undercut and then do sequential rounds of layoffs."" World of DaaS, 2023
Twitter
VP Corporate Strategy

"I've had two grandparents pass away from this disease."" Othman Laraki, TechCrunch 2015
Color
- Nish Bhat:
- Taylor Sittler:UCSF
"Co-founded 2015 by Elad Gil, Nish Bhat, Taylor Sittler, Othman Laraki (CEO, BRCA2 carrier). Mission: democratize genetic testing at 1/10th traditional cost.""2015 年由 Elad Gil、Nish Bhat、Taylor Sittler、Othman Laraki(CEO、BRCA2 携带者)共同创立。 Wikipedia / TechCrunch 2015
"Insurance companies covered $3,000 tests but not $300 alternatives, forcing repositioning.""
"Evolved to population health delivery platform. COVID expansion: vaccination delivery, state-level public health agreements, enterprise wellness.""
"FDA regulators are 'very smart' and science-driven.
"Critiques AI regulation discourse as 'naive'—legislators, not experts, will set rules.""AI 监管的常见话术很 naive——制定规则的会是议员而非专家。"
"Building Color Health with focus on BRCA2 genetic testing... needed to navigate complex regulatory landscape (CLIA licensing)."" YC Startup School, 2018
CLIA(Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments)许可是临床检测实验室的核心合规要求——这一类合规壁垒是科技公司常年绕不过去的,但一旦攻克就构成 moat。
YC Startup School (2018); My First Million (2024)
"Started by investing his own money as an angel investor, eventually ran out of funds. Began raising SPVs for specific companies when personal funds ran out. LPs in his SPVs asked him to start a standalone fund.""
"I started by investing my own money as an angel, but I eventually ran out of funds. So, I began raising SPVs for specific companies.""
"Existing startup literature (Zero to One, Lean Startup) focused on early stages; there was a gap for companies scaling from product-market fit to large organizations.""
"If you could only write one thing on a billboard, it would be: raise prices."" 20VC, 2018
"One of the big fallacies in Silicon Valley is that every business model should be Amazon's. It is possible that you would get more market share if you charged more for your products versus less."" Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
6.3 Solo GP
"$1.1B fund (2023), currently raising up to $3B. No investment committees. 'Decision-making flows through one brain.' Can 'write 9-figure checks in days.""11 亿美元基金(2023),目前正在募集最高 30 亿美元。
- 决策速度:没有 IC(investment committee)意味着关键决策从几周缩短到几小时
"When Gil commits early, 'the valuation immediately goes up'—his participation = proof of 'thoughtfulness on timing, real product judgment.""
"Transitioning from solo GP to building a small team: 4 people on investment side, 6-7 on back office/finance.""
"Team includes builders (engineers, product people) who benchmark AI infrastructure and build internal tools, plus private equity backgrounds for commercial analysis."" The Peel, 2024
"Now mixes personal investments with fund investments, incubations, and AI-driven roll-ups.""
Gil
"Hire 12-18 months ahead of current company size because the company transforms every 12-18 months."" First Text, 2019 / High Growth Handbook
"Things should always feel tight. You should never feel like you have too many people; you should always feel like you have too few."" Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
"Most viable startup ideas emerge from identifying existing fragmented behaviors and codifying them into scalable services."" First Text, 2019
Stripe Press
- 决策: 把书交给 Stripe Press 出版(而非 O'Reilly 或 Penguin),保持"硅谷内部 by builders for builders"的定位
20VC (2018); Y Combinator Podcast (2018); High Growth Handbook
No Priors(2023-)
"AI-focused podcast co-hosted with Sarah Guo (Conviction founder, ex-Greylock). Talk to 'world-leading AI engineers, researchers and founders about the biggest questions.""与 Sarah Guo(Conviction 创始人、前 Greylock)共同主持的 AI 主题播客。
同年他们与 Eric Wu(前 Opendoor CEO)、Luis Videgaray(前墨西哥外长)共同创立 Brain Co:
"Founded 2024 after Jared Kushner approached Gil over coffee (Feb 2024). Problem: Fortune 100s and government institutions want AI adoption but lack engineering depth. ~40 employees. $30M Series A led by Elad Gil and Affinity Partners. Co-founders: Elad Gil, Jared Kushner, Luis Videgaray, Eric Wu. $30M Series A,由 Elad Gil 和 Affinity Partners 领投。
7.3 Braintrust:AI eval
"Braintrust: AI eval company also incubated by Gil. Series A led by Martin Casado at a16z. Gil helped incubate initial product and is investor.""Braintrust:另一家由 Gil 孵化的 AI eval(评估)公司。Series A 由 a16z 的 Martin Casado 领投。
"Founded/incubated Brinco—a company building data infrastructure and vertical-specific AI apps for large institutions. Built permitting approval flow for government that condensed months of manual review into an hour."" Mixergy, 2026
"Battle-tested platforms for boring infrastructure + custom AI agents for high-ROI specific tools."" Mixergy, 2026
Brinco 的策略是 wedge-in:"find a niche application, prove value quickly, then cross-sell additional modules"。
"We're trying to take the thousand most important books that are off of copyright and translate them into dozens of languages using AI and then create audiobooks off of all of them so people can download the great works of history from anywhere in the world in any language."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"User evaluations showed preference for machine-translated works over human translations due to modern language, conciseness, and consistency."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"Every society that's at apex ultimately has built large public art to inspire the next generation to move forward for progress."" Sourcery, 2025
7.6 Monumental:
"Working on Monumental project—building large-scale public monuments to inspire future generations. Looking for someone to fund new public monuments."" Sourcery, 2024 / LaBossiere Podcast, 2024
"I do wish we did that a little bit more as a country. But there was a period between 1870 post-Civil War up to the 1960s or so, right around when JFK passed, where there was this series in America where we did a bunch of interesting experiments."" My First Million, 2024
"Wants to establish innovative K-12 schools inspired by ancient Greece: reasoning, logic, math, writing, physical fitness."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"We need to teach kids that things are hard, and that's okay. You just keep going."" The Peel, 2024
Mistral
- Application / vertical: Perplexity(搜索)、Harvey(法律)、Decagon(客服)、Character(消费)、Pika(视频)、ElevenLabs(语音)、Cursor(代码)、Granola(会议)
- Infrastructure / tooling: Braintrust(eval)
"Invests 'aggressively across the stack from foundation models' to infrastructure/observability. 'Most resilient value accumulates in infrastructure and tooling.""
"Looking at incubating companies and buying operating assets as multi-pronged strategy."" The Peel, 2024
"Quietly rolling up service businesses and using AI to dramatically increase margins by making teams more productive."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"AI-powered virtual agents can dramatically increase gross margins (one company went from 60% to 68% in one year).""AI 驱动的虚拟 agent 可以显著提升 gross margin(一家公司从 60% 提到 68%,只用了一年)。"This Week in Startups, 2025
2025 年 7 月,The Information(Natasha Mascarenhas)报道 Gil 正在募集一只约 $1.5B 的新基金,视 LP 兴趣可扩至 $2B——若完成将是 Solo GP 史上最大单只基金之一,并显著扩张他当时约 $2B 的 AUM(The Information / Techmeme,2025-07-24;techstartups.com 同日转述)。
- 关键假设: "made it" 不只是 financial outcome,还包括 societal impact(Alexandria, Monumental, K-12);AI 让多个项目可以并行推进而无需相应增加 headcount

1.1 Rackleff's Law 的引用
"If you have a great team in a terrible market, the market wins. If you have a terrible team in a great market, the market wins. And if you have a great team in a great market, something magical happens."" Invest Like the Best, 2018(引用 Rackleff's Law)
"I've seen really great people get absolutely crushed by bad markets. And I've seen pretty mediocre people do extremely well in a very good market."" Alejandro Cremades Bio
"I saw great people crushed by terrible markets and I've seen reasonably mediocre people do really well."" My First Million (2024) / This Week in Startups (2025)
"We are more market limited than founder limited. There is a dearth of truly great founders at any given moment in time."" Turpentine VC, 2023
"Innovation is market-limited more than founder-limited—great founders pointed at right opportunities would saturate markets quickly."" LaBossiere Podcast, 2024
"Three types of non-obvious markets: brand new fast-growing, seemingly crowded but early, and distribution/channel openings."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"Looks for organic growth of 20-30% monthly even from a small base as a strong signal."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"If something is growing nicely organically and compounding 20% month over month, that is a strong sign it will work at a much larger scale long term."" First Text, 2019
1.6 segment-level LTV/CAC
"Segments analysis: examines LTV/CAC by customer segment rather than averaging across all customers."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"Power users often drive the real economics of a business."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"I've seen great people get crushed by terrible markets, and I've seen mediocre teams do very well in great markets. Product-market fit gets you from 0 to 1, but the team gets you from 1 to 1,000."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"Investing in Notion, Airtable, Retool without a thesis—some investments were based on recognizing talented founders rather than market thesis."" My First Million, 2024
这是一个有意思的 caveat:他的 market wins 框架不是 absolute——在某些情况下"smart individual at the right moment"也能产生重大结果。
2.1 2015:End of Cycle? 博客
"Warning sign: rapid diversification of startup types receiving funding signals cycle exhaustion. Historical parallel to 2001-2003: after internet boom, investors scattered capital into P2P, mobile, cleantech, nanotech—all failed. Real opportunity (social networks/sharing economy) emerged nearby."" End of Cycle? Blog, 2015
"A software-enabled, network connected, crowd funded, smart toaster is, when all is said and done, still just a toaster."" End of Cycle? Blog, 2015
"Watch for thesis-driven investing (VCs shift from reactive to predefined bets = desperation signal). Respect business fundamentals: tech valuations don't apply to 'bits to atoms."" End of Cycle? Blog, 2015
2.3 2023:simultaneously over and under hyped 框架
"Every time you go through a big technology shift, things are simultaneously over and under hyped.""
2.4 dot-com 类比
"Technology cycles repeat: draws parallel between dot-com bust (2000 internet companies IPO'd, ~12 survived) and current AI wave."" Sourcery, 2025
"Roughly 2000 companies went public. Of these only a dozen or two survived."" Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"Advises AI founders to 'take a cold hard look at exiting in the next 12-18 months."" Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"Exception: OpenAI and Anthropic 'should absolutely not exit."" Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"50-80% of venture-backed companies traditionally fail; this applies to AI wave too.""
"Predicts 'a lot of consolidation and M&A coming quite soon."" AI Market Clarity, 2025
"AI markets have 'crystallized' after 4 years. Clear winners emerged in: Foundation Models (7 players), Code (Claude/Cursor/Copilot), Legal (Harvey), Medical Scribing (Abridge/Ambience/Nuance), Customer Service (Decagon/Sierra), Search (Perplexity).""AI 明显的赢家已经在以下垂直出现:基础模型(7 家)、Code(Claude/Cursor/Copilot)、法律(Harvey)、医疗 scribe(Abridge/Ambience/Nuance)、客服(Decagon/Sierra)、搜索(Perplexity)。"AI Market Clarity, 2025
这是"both"而非"either/or"。
2.9 "underhyped" 的量化版本:units of cognition 与 $5T 服务业 headcount(American Optimist 2024)
"The end product of this AI revolution is units of cognition. You are effectively renting something that will think or do things on your behalf."" American Optimist(Joe Lonsdale),2024-11-03 [00:32:06]
3. 关于 AI 投资:航空类比、Three Ages of Compute、四波框架
(Early Days of AI)、Three Ages of Compute(Lost Tapes 2024)、四波采用框架(Early Days of AI)。
"Rather than view LLMs, Transformers, and diffusion models as part of a continuum with past 'AI', it is worth thinking of this as an entirely new era. Treating AI as evolution is like calling 'an airplane just another kind of car—but with wings."" Early Days of AI Blog, 2023
"Previously roughly all machine learning startups failed because prior capabilities lacked sufficient advancement."" Early Days of AI Blog, 2023
3.2 Three Ages of Compute
"Three ages of humankind framework: human-only compute → hybrid age (current) → machine age."" Lost Tapes / Turpentine VC, 2024
"We are transitioning from a human compute-only age to a hybrid age, where machine compute and output displace human predictability."" Turpentine VC, 2024
"Four adoption waves: 1) Native GenAI (ChatGPT, Midjourney), 2) Early adopters (GPT-3.5/4 startups), 3) Emerging startups (voice, video), 4) Enterprise adoption (2024-2025)."" Early Days of AI, 2023
"Technology adoption takes a decade to propagate. The challenge is how to cram a decade of change management into six months."" At the Edge, 2025
3.4 GPT Ladder
"AI as a 'GPT ladder'—each model cycle opens entirely new markets that were previously unavailable. Legal failed on GPT-3.5 but 'really took off' with GPT-4.""AI AI Market Clarity, 2025 / LaBossiere, 2024
"A '5-10X better model than GPT-3 should create a whole new startup ecosystem."" AI Startup vs Incumbent, 2023
3.5 Google PARC moment
"Google had a Xerox PARC style moment where they came up with an amazing breakthrough and then sat on it.""Google 有过一次 Xerox PARC 式的时刻——他们做出了一项惊人的突破,但坐在上面没动。"Lost Tapes / Turpentine VC, 2024
"Google developed the transformer ('Attention Is All You Need' paper) but struggled to commercialize it due to internal AI safetyism and brand impact fears. OpenAI built GPT-1 on the technology; many original paper authors left Google to start their own companies—a 'traitorous eight' dynamic similar to Fairchild Semiconductor.""Google 开发了 transformer("Attention Is All You Need" 论文),但因内部的 AI safetyism 和品牌影响担忧无法商业化。 Turpentine VC, 2024
3.6 startups vs incumbents
"Internet wave ~60-70% startups / 30-40% incumbents. Mobile wave ~20% startups / 80% incumbents. Crypto ~100% startups."" AI Startup vs Incumbent, 2023
"Current AI wave: startups will 'finally start to get real value from AI."" AI Startup vs Incumbent, 2023
3.7 sweet spots: highly repetitive, highly paid
"Sweet spots: 'highly repetitive, highly paid tasks' where 'imperfect fidelity is fine...with a human in the loop."" AI Startup vs Incumbent, 2023
NVIDIA + open source
"NVIDIA's moat is software (CUDA) and interconnect technology, not just raw chip performance.""NVIDIA 的护城河是软件(CUDA)和互联技术,不仅仅是裸芯片性能。"Turpentine VC, 2024
"Open-source as 'release valve' against narrow ethical frameworks imposed by closed-source providers."" Turpentine VC, 2024
3.9 "the more I learn, the less I know"
"The more I learn about AI, the less I know. In other markets, the more you learn about something, the more you know."" At the Edge, 2025
"Hands-on with technology—tests models, writes scripts, benchmarks performance."" At the Edge, 2025
"Identifies AI waves by being hands-on with technology: writing scripts, testing performance, extrapolating scaling laws."" StrictlyVC, 2025
3.10 2026 GDP 预测
"AI ECONOMICS: OpenAI and Anthropic each ~0.1% US GDP at ~$30B revenue. Projects AI could reach 1% GDP by end of 2026. 5-10%?"Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
(No Priors 2024)
"I think the other piece of it is there are going to be companies that I call like AI durable, the ones where AI doesn't matter that much. And so the negative of it is that also means that maybe AI isn't that important for them as a tool."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:25:58]
"A new AI HR company isn't going to make headway against the beautiful bundle that they provide. And maybe the biggest risk to a company like Rippling is if headcount starts dropping and their customer base is due to AI, then they lose some seats."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:26:39]
"There's some areas which are basically like a data store pretending to be something more."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:27:29]
"So AI comes and eats away at the world, what things will survive and what things will get augmented, but what things just won't care. And so I really like the companies that just don't care. The extreme example of that would be a railroad.""AI
(No Priors 2024)
"I don't really think of them as SaaS software replacements... I actually view it as augmenting the people that use the software. And so really the question is, where are the large numbers of people effectively doing email jobs, right? They're cutting and pasting text, they're synthesizing information, moving it around, they're manipulating it."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:21:52]
"Suddenly you have an agent that can speak 20 languages 24-7 that doesn't get tired, that's always on track. It has customer support."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:22:51]
"It's interesting to see that a lot of these things are starting off more as utilities while in the consumer social era, obviously, there's a lot of just social apps... And this time we're seeing a lot more around information utility, information and content generation."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:04:29]
(No Priors 2024)
⚠️ 注意归属:在这一段里,"o1 是一条 new scaling law / a new dimension of competition"的框架实际上是 Sarah Guo 的判断(她明确说"which I do subscribe to, by the way")。
"It's kind of like GPT-2 for that approach. And the idea is that that could scale further over time... it's the initial early proof point that you feel like something really real is happening. And then it's just going to be subject to the same scaling laws of more compute, more data, etc. And it'll get dramatically better really quickly."" No Priors, 2024-10-17 [00:16:17]
Gil 的创业策略集中体现了他对 contrarianism 的偏爱——他反对几乎所有 Silicon Valley 的 received wisdom(关于 grinding、关于 co-founder、关于价格、关于 difficulty)。
4.1 dumb easy thing first
"Why are you doing the really hard thing? Just go do the dumb, easy thing that you think is non-defensible and build defensibility because the really hard, complex thing is something you should do in three, four years when you've run out of the easy stuff.""
"Early in the life cycle of a new technology wave, the best thing you can do is go after the basic, low-hanging fruit. Late in a technology wave, you go after the complex, high-hurdle stuff."" Turpentine VC, 2023
"Don't go do the hard thing. Do the easy thing that is valuable, because you can still do that right now while the market is wide open."" At the Edge, 2025
4.2 raise prices
"If you could only write one thing on a billboard, it would be: raise prices.""
"One of the big fallacies in Silicon Valley is that every business model should be Amazon's. It is possible that you would get more market share if you charged more for your products versus less."" Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
"Higher pricing power is a critical growth lever—provides capital for engineering and acquisition reinvestment."" First Text, 2019
"Most valuable tech companies (Google, Apple, Microsoft) operate with high margins; higher margins fund aggressive R&D and customer acquisition."" 20VC, 2018
4.3 multi-miracle businesses fail
"Multi-miracle businesses fail: if your model requires two or more unrelated low-probability events, you will fail."" YC Startup School, 2018
"Every startup needs at least one miracle to succeed. If it were obvious that it would work, everybody would already be doing it."" YC Startup School, 2018
"Startups are definitionally an exercise in working on what is non-obvious. If it were obvious, someone would already be doing it and there would be no startup opportunity."" World of DaaS, 2023
"The best companies are non-obvious at the time. If they were obvious, everyone would be doing them, and you wouldn't have to convince anyone of anything."" The Peel, 2024
"Technology waves are non-obvious until they are obvious. Then everybody starts looking for the non-obvious thing again, but the obvious thing is what you should do."" Mixergy, 2026
4.5 grinding mythology 的反对
"There is a lore that you should grind eternally and eventually something will work. The reality is most companies that succeeded ended up working pretty early."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"Success is not about grinding for 70 years until something works. The best companies start working very quickly."" Minus One, 2026
"One of the big myths of Silicon Valley is that you should keep grinding forever. If something does not work fast, it usually does not work."" LaBossiere, 2024
这是 Gil 给 founder 的一条最反 received wisdom 的建议——大多数 founder 听到的标准建议是"persist no matter what",但 Gil 说"if it's not working fast, pivot or shut down"。
4.6 against "you need a co-founder"
"Advocating against the necessity of co-founders. YC normalized the idea of equal co-founders, but many of the world's biggest companies (Dell, Amazon) were solo-founded or had unequal splits."" Minus One, 2026
"What matters is clear decision-making authority."" Minus One, 2026
4.7 raising too much seed capital removes pivot ability
"Evaluates the 'room to fail' that excessive early capital eliminates—raising too much at seed removes ability to pivot."" Minus One, 2026
4.8 "if it's hard now, it's easy later"
"It's also hard now, but easy later, right? If it's hard to figure out what the one thing is, okay, you take some upfront difficulty to sort of make a bet or to figure that out. But then from there on out, your operating philosophy can be a lot simpler."" This Week in Startups, 2025 / My First Million, 2024
4.9 "the only good generic advice is no good generic advice"
"The only good generic startup advice is that there's no good generic startup advice. So it's all contextual."" Sourcery, 2025
"People will give generic advice on how you should approach things. It may work well for the person giving the advice, but poorly for everybody else."" World of DaaS, 2023
(South Park Commons 2023)
"The best companies are incredibly capital efficient. If nobody is willing to pay for what you are building, maybe it is not worth building."" South Park Commons,2023-10-28 [00:56:42]
4.11 pivot 要跨市场,不要 local pivot(South Park Commons 2023)
"When people pivot, they tend to pivot locally. They do not tend to pivot across markets, which is a huge mistake because you are stuck in a local maximum."" South Park Commons,2023-10-28 [00:25:39]
5. 关于组织与扩张:反 Holacracy、winning is culture、High Growth Handbook
5.1 winning is culture
"People often ask me what the single biggest determinant of culture in a startup is, and I say winning. It is not the kombucha or the ping pong table; it is winning."" Minus One, 2026
"Single biggest determinant of startup culture is winning, not perks."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
5.2 anti-Holacracy
"Holacracies and Valve-style organizational structures are flawed and tend not to work. People want direction, want to know what they should be building, and want coordination.""Holacracy 和 Valve 式的扁平结构都是有缺陷的,通常不 work。 Invest Like the Best, 2018
"Some people will inherently act badly, so you need processes to deal with that."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
5.3 self-inflicted wounds
"Most companies tend to die of self-inflicted wounds or to really slow down of self-inflicted wounds through bad management, bad people choices and bad culture."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"The biggest place where founders break at scale: doing stuff they hate and inability to delegate."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
5.4 hire well or fire well
"There is an old saying that people either hire well or fire well. If you at least do one of those, you can build a good organization."" Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
"Google hired extremely well (8 interviews per person) but was poor at firing; Facebook was less good at hiring but effective at letting go.""Google 招人特别好(每人 8 轮面试),但开人不行;Facebook 招人不那么严,但敢让人走。"First Text, 2019
5.5 12-18 months ahead hiring
"When you are hiring, you are only hiring 12 to 18 months ahead of where the company is. Because if a company is growing rapidly, every 12 to 18 months it is a different company."" First Text, 2019
5.6 things should always feel tight
"Things should always feel tight. You should never feel like you have too many people; you should always feel like you have too few."" Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
5.7 sometimes you have to slow down growth
"You sometimes have to slow down growth rather than accelerate it, not because of capital constraints, but because you are going to blow up the way the company works."" 20VC, 2018
"Frequent organizational restructuring is normal in hyper-growth—operational requirements shift every six months."" First Text, 2019
5.8 layoff strategy
"If you have to do a layoff, it is much better to do the deep one up front. Culture gets hurt when people have uncertainty and instability."" Logan Bartlett Show, 2023
"It is better to overcut and then rehire than to undercut and then do sequential rounds of layoffs."" World of DaaS, 2023
5.9 hire 12-18 months ahead AND tour of experts
"Tour of experts approach: when hiring for a function you don't know, interview the best people in that function first to learn what excellence looks like.""Tour of experts 方法:当你要为一个自己不懂的职能招人时,先去面试该职能的顶级专家,学一下'优秀'长什么样。"20VC, 2018
"In three to six months, you can become quite dangerous in a segment if you obsessively focus on it."" South Park Commons,2023-10-28
5.10 executive operating manuals
"Executive operating manuals (like Stripe COO Claire Hughes Johnson's letter) accelerate onboarding and reduce friction.""高管的 operating manual(比如 Stripe COO Claire Hughes Johnson 的那封信)能加速 onboarding、减少摩擦。"First Text, 2019 / Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
"Executive operating manuals (Claire Hughes Johnson model) remove guesswork and accelerate team ramp-up.""Executive operating manuals(Claire Hughes Johnson 模型)能消除猜测、加速团队 ramp-up。"Y Combinator Podcast, 2018
"CEO is ultimately the 'chief psychologist' of the company.""CEO 最终是公司的 'chief psychologist'。"Invest Like the Best, 2018
5.12 product → distribution
"You need to shift from thinking of yourself as a product-centric company into a company that's also distribution-centric."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"In the early days, you absolutely want to delight a small number of users versus create a so-so experience for everybody."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
5.13 founder mode
"Founders are often pushed to delegate too heavily, but the real question is what you are uniquely good at. You should be hands-on with the things you excel at and delegate the rest."" StrictlyVC, 2025
"Founder mode: be hands-on with what you're uniquely good at, delegate what doesn't benefit from your involvement.""Founder mode: 在你独特擅长的部分 hands-on,在不需要你参与的部分授权。"StrictlyVC, 2025
"Worst advice: pushing founders toward extremes of either micromanaging everything or over-delegating."" StrictlyVC, 2025
5.14 leadership vs popularity
"CEOs often confuse popularity with leadership. You need to be a leader; you don't need to be popular.""CEO The Peel, 2024
"True leadership prioritizes long-term company health over employee popularity."" The Peel, 2024
5.15 Steve Jobs 重读
"Steve Jobs' biggest strength wasn't a reality distortion field; it was listening more clearly than anyone else and communicating that reality concisely.""Steve Jobs 最大的优势不是 reality distortion field——而是比任何人都更清楚地倾听、并简洁地表达那个现实。"The Peel, 2024
"$1.1B fund (2023), currently raising up to $3B. No investment committees. 'Decision-making flows through one brain.' Can 'write 9-figure checks in days.""11 亿美元基金(2023),目前正在募集最高 30 亿美元。
以 The Information 为准。
6.2 selection lens:underlying systems
"Evaluates companies through 'underlying system' lenses. Seeks infrastructure plays 'in the critical path.' Distinguishes 'dying internally' from genuinely growing companies. 'Can often make a call after a single conversation' in known spaces."" VC Corner, 2025
6.3 founder value-add
"Appears in rounds at critical moments. Makes strategic executive introductions. Helps structure fundraising. Provides guidance from lived experience at Google, Twitter, Color Health.""
6.4 signal effect
"When Gil commits early, 'the valuation immediately goes up'—his participation = proof of 'thoughtfulness on timing, real product judgment."" VC Corner, 2025
"Direct relationship with an experienced builder over institutional prestige. Pattern library across cycles/categories.""
"Started by investing his own money as an angel investor, eventually ran out of funds. Began raising SPVs (single investment funds) for specific companies when personal funds ran out. LPs in his SPVs asked him to start a standalone fund."" 然后开始为具体公司募 SPV(专项基金)。
"Transitioning from solo GP to building a small team: 4 people on investment side, 6-7 on back office/finance."" Sourcery, 2025
"Team includes builders (engineers, product people) who benchmark AI infrastructure and build internal tools, plus private equity backgrounds for commercial analysis."" The Peel, 2024
6.7 mercenary → missionary → artist
"Early in your career, be a mercenary to find opportunity. In the middle, be a missionary to do important work. At the end, be an artist to focus on the craft.""职业早期做 mercenary(为机会而干);中期做 missionary(做重要的事);后期做 artist(专注于工艺)。"Turpentine VC, 2023(引用 Naval Ravikant 框架)
Solo GP
但 Solo GP 也有结构性问题(见"批判视角"章节):可持续性(Gil 不可能永远做投资)、bandwidth(一个人能 personally 看的 deal 有限)、succession(Solo GP 是否可以传承?)。
"Has always prioritized compliance and accounting to avoid fraud and existential risks.""
Salk → BioAge
"There's lots of evidence that aging is a program that you can perturb."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"Aging is a biological program, not an inevitable process; caloric restriction and drug interventions prove this in multiple organisms."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
- Spring Discovery:
"Seeded BioAge, helped Spring Discovery, supported Laura Deming's AgeOne accelerator."" AgeOne accelerator。"Invest Like the Best, 2018
"Three challenges in aging drug development: underfunding, FDA doesn't classify aging as disease, lack of commercial incentive."" My First Million, 2024
7.4 rapamycin 的论据
"There's theories, but I don't know which theory is right. And the other piece of information that we have is that we know that there's certain drugs that will extend lifespan in multiple organisms. Rapamycin would be an example where mice will live 10 to 30% longer."" My First Million, 2024
注意他的 epistemic humility——"I don't know which theory is right"。
"CRISPR is overfocused on the gene-editing side. The targeting, immune response, and cell coverage are the real unsolved problems in gene therapy.""CRISPR My First Million, 2024
"Gene therapy's real issues aren't being addressed as effectively as the CRISPR-Cas editing side."" My First Million, 2024
7.6 personal practice:保守
"Practices basic health fundamentals: exercise, diet, sleep, meaningful relationships. Cautiously approaches pharmaceutical interventions for longevity (baby aspirin, statins, some metformin)."" Invest Like the Best, 2018
"Humble about what he doesn't know ('I've been busy focusing on hardcore biopharma' when asked about Brian Johnson)."" My First Million, 2024
"Focuses on 'hardcore biopharma' drug development that can benefit society at large, not personal biohacking."" My First Million, 2024
7.7 biotech
"Biotech's flip-to-pharma model prevents massive independent companies; healthcare is 20% of GDP but biopharma market cap dwarfed by a few tech companies.""Biotech 的 flip-to-pharma 模式阻止了大型独立公司的出现;医疗占 GDP 的 20%,但 biopharma 总市值远小于少数几家科技公司。"World of DaaS, 2023
"Biotech's VC-led incubation and 'flip-to-pharma' model is structurally broken.""Biotech 的 VC-led incubation + flip-to-pharma 模式是结构性破损的。"Turpentine VC, 2023
7.8 for the field:fund + accelerator + advisor
(South Park Commons 2023)
"Healthcare is a distorted system because the person who benefits is two steps away from the person who pays and one step away from the person who decides."" South Park Commons,2023-10-28 [00:15:09]
Alexandria, Monumental, K-12
"Working on Alexandria project: translating 1,000 most important out-of-copyright books into every language using AI, including audiobooks. Aim: cover 80%+ of humanity's languages."" This Week in Startups, 2025 / Mixergy, 2026
8.2 Monumental:
"Founding Monumental to build inspiring monuments. Looking for someone to fund new public monuments."" Sourcery (2024) / The Peel (2024)
"Working on building inspiring public monuments through a project to create large-scale public art."" Sourcery, 2025
"Every society that's at apex ultimately has built large public art to inspire the next generation to move forward for progress."" Sourcery, 2025
"Tech industry had a mimetic shift away from public beauty and monuments toward policy-driven capital allocation.""
"Wants to establish innovative K-12 schools inspired by ancient Greece: reasoning, logic, math, writing, physical fitness."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"Developing K-12 schools inspired by ancient Greece."" Sourcery, 2024
"References Proof School (math-centric school in SF) as example of good education.""引用 Proof School(旧金山的数学专项学校)作为优秀教育的样本。"The Peel, 2024
"We need to teach kids that things are hard, and that's okay. You just keep going."" The Peel, 2024
8.4 abundance vs scarcity
"There have been two big agendas: the abundance agenda, which is pro-progress and pro-technology, and the scarcity agenda, which argues we should have less and prevent progress.""有两个大的 agenda:abundance agenda(pro-progress, pro-technology)和 scarcity agenda(主张我们应该消费更少、阻止进步)。"LaBossiere, 2024
8.5 optimism is reflective
"Optimism is a reflective asset. The more people think something can be done, the more likely it gets done."" LaBossiere, 2024
"I do wish we did that a little bit more as a country. But there was a period between 1870 post-Civil War up to the 1960s or so, right around when JFK passed, where there was this series in America where we did a bunch of interesting experiments."" My First Million (2024) / This Week in Startups (2025)
8.7 delayed adulthood concern
"Delayed adulthood trend means fewer young founders building significant companies vs Stripe/Figma/Facebook era."" The Peel, 2024
"Concerning trend: fewer young founders building massive, iconic companies compared to Stripe/Figma/Facebook era."" LaBossiere, 2024
8.8 societal change as primary
"Driven by societal impact alongside financial returns."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"Technology as societal lever: prioritizes using tech for social change, financial returns follow."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"I view technology as a force for good. I think it has helped raise, elevate hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.""
"Naval's framework: mercenary early, missionary later, artist when you've made it.""Naval 的框架:早期 mercenary、中期 missionary、'made it' 之后做 artist。"My First Million (2024) / This Week in Startups (2025)
(American Optimist 2024)
"Research from the 80s shows that one-on-one tutoring can increase student performance by one or two standard deviations.""80 年代的研究显示,一对一辅导能把学生的表现提高一到两个标准差。"American Optimist(Joe Lonsdale),2024-11-03
9.1 "Slop Age"——AI
"AI creates useful slop at volume, which means humans are still needed to desloppify the slop.""AI 大规模产出有用的 slop,这意味着仍然需要人类去 desloppify。"Blog: Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
9.2 Harness
"It is easy to start cross-selling, which makes a company very defensible. It is incredibly hard for a competitor to rip out a dozen integrated products."" Minus One, 2026
"Imagine you are typing into a document and it says, 'Sorry, you cannot type that.' Why should a handful of people in Silicon Valley adjudicate what the entire world should or should not say?""
"Deep artisanal 'my code is my craft' engineers decreasingly happy in world of AI. Systems thinkers and product thinkers engineers happiest."" Blog: Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"We are shifting from a world where you are buying monthly packages or seats for software, to a world where you are effectively buying units of labor.""
Random thoughts while gazing at the misty AI Frontier
Compute/tokens 作为新的经济记账单位(事实,原文措辞):
"Compute (or could be stated as tokens) is a new unit of denomination for economic value.""Compute(也可以表述为 tokens)是经济价值的一种新记账单位。"Blog: Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"AI will first automate away the things that are easier to form a closed loop learning system on.""AI 会先自动化那些更容易形成闭环学习系统的工作。"Blog: Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"We are likely in the golden era of AI + humanity."" Blog: Random Thoughts (misty AI Frontier), 2026-04
"I've never sold a share of Stripe and hope not to for a long time because I believe in the company."" Sourcery Podcast, 2025
10.2 Anduril:
"If the big technology players are running away from defense, this huge category, that means there's an opportunity for a new technology company in defense."" This Week in Startups, 2025
"Companies that innovate early tend to keep innovating, and companies that innovate late never innovate again."" World of DaaS, 2023
Perplexity(搜索)、Cursor(代码编辑)、ElevenLabs(语音)、Pika(视频)、Granola(会议笔记)、Character、Harvey、Mistral——都是在已有模型之上构建差异化用户体验的应用层公司。
10.5 Color Health
Palmer Luckey(Sourcery 2025)
被问"你见过最好的 redemption story"时,Gil 给出的两个样本都是他在争议最大时刻下注的:Parker Conrad(Zenefits 天使 → 争议离场 → Rippling 第一轮)与 Palmer Luckey(Meta 风波后 → Anduril 第一轮):
"I always thought he was amazing. I always thought he would have some amazing redemption arc. And so I got involved with Rippling in the very first round as sort of a vote of confidence behind him... I think in both cases, they basically got thrown under the bus in one form or another. So I think they deserve that arc."" Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
11. 关于 luck 与 prepared mind
11.1 Luck favors the prepared mind
"Luck favors the prepared mind, meaning because you know what you're looking for, you can actually spot luck when it presents itself."" My First Million, 2024
"I think I was just lucky. I started investing in a good time when there was a lot to still be done in SaaS and consumer."" My First Million, 2024
"When you talk to people who have been investors their entire lives, it is all theoretical. They do not know what it is like to have your entire life go down the drain tomorrow."" LaBossiere Podcast, 2024
"As an investor, you do very little to impact the success of a company. It is the founders who do everything."" First Text, 2019
12.1 "anything is possible" 与 shamelessness
"I think it's a little bit of almost shamelessness around certain things, where you just don't sweat it. It's like learning a foreign language more easily if you're willing to sound like an idiot. It's the willingness to ask a really dumb question that turns out to be a good question."" Uncapped, 2025-04-10 [00:02:21]
"You should just go and try things... a lot of barriers that people kind of set up for themselves mentally or that they perceive to be existing societally actually don't really exist.""
"Some of the best careers I've seen have been unplanned... I started investing effectively by accident when friends asked me to invest in their companies. I never would have thought I'd be running a multi-stage investment practice. The flip side of this ad hoc approach is that it optimizes for market need. If you're reactive to the market in the moment, then you can actually do really interesting things.""
"I've definitely tried to set things up in a flexible way up front... if I allow that sort of organic path to happen, I end up with better outcomes, and I also enjoy them more.""
"Early in your career, you have to be at least partially mercenary. You need that mercenary hunger... But once you're successful, if you're not missionary, you're a zero-sum person, and nobody wants to work with you. Later in life, you become an artist, doing it for the love of the craft."" Uncapped, 2025-04-10 [00:11:34]
新意在"zero-sum person, nobody wants to work with you"——他把 missionary 转型从"道德选择"重述为networked 的生存必需:在一个反复博弈的圈子里,成功后还 mercenary 的人会被网络排斥掉。
"One is location; you should go to a cluster. For AI, it's the Bay Area; for FinTech, it's largely New York. Two is what market are you in? Going into a bad market can be devastating for your career unless you leave it quickly. Third is which company do you join in the market?""
"Sometimes they are getting attracted to a title or a scope... people have a hard time going from, I used to be a director and now you're making me a manager. Wouldn't this other place make me a VP?""
"The opportunity cost, it's almost like opportunity cost on market and network is what you should be focused on."" Uncapped, 2025-04-10 [00:18:52]
12.5 network
"Certain groups of people almost seem to self-assemble in different industries over time. And it's often odd how early some of these folks meet each other. There's one really well-known founder... all the people that ended up being the most successful people he knew in Silicon Valley, he all met in his first six months out here before anybody knew who he was.""
"Yeah, 100% it matters because of the network and the brand. It opens doors and opportunities and creates a lifelong network."" Uncapped, 2025-04-10 [00:28:49]
12.6 winning is culture(复述,作为 network 识别信号)——略
12.7 self-sacrifice 与 "made it" 的重新定义
"How do you maximize the impact you're having in your minimal time on the planet? How do you judge yourself relative to what you think may be possible?""
"It may be terrible for the individual in some cases, but maybe fantastic for society. And maybe society doesn't move forward that much without these sorts of folks.""
(Ovum)
"There's four or five areas of biology that I think can be applied that nobody's doing anything. One is, and there's a company called Ovum doing this, there's research out of Japan where you can take any cell type, you can differentiate it down a set of lineages, and then eventually you can make sperm or egg.""
12.9 反"follow your passion"(Sourcery 2025)
"There's a lot of advice out there that I just don't agree with, like follow what you're passionate about. Because most people's passions are really bad, dead-end things to follow... Every once in a while, your passion lines up with something really important for the world or really important for a field or discipline or industry or society and great, follow your passion. But most of the time, it's really bad advice and it actually leads people to a suboptimal state in life."" Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"Sometimes I'll sit down in the morning, I'll say, what do I actually have to do today?... what are the two or three things that if I get them done are actually important? And then what's that for the week?"" 然后这周的那两三件事又是什么?"Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"I basically want to think in terms of one, three and 10 years, and think across four spheres... personal life and kids and family... society and societal impact... the work side of it... And then the last piece is more like, how do you think about relevance in the world and society over a longer arc. And so I don't want to wake up 10 years from now and say, where did the 10 years go?""
他自己也预先消毒了这类练习的局限("think 10 years ahead, which is of course silly and stupid and it never actually works"——想 10 年当然是傻的、从来不会照着发生)。
(American Optimist 2024)
在 American Optimist(Joe Lonsdale,2024-11)里,Gil 第一次把"会变得极其成功的创始人"归纳成三种原型:
"There are three types of founders that become hyper-successful: the polymathic hyper-intellectual, the hardcore focused overdrive founder, and the network effect business builder."" American Optimist(Joe Lonsdale),2024-11-03 [00:17:35]
- polymathic hyper-intellectual(博学超级智者型):Patrick 与 John Collison([[patrick-collison]],Stripe)、Larry Page 与 Sergey Brin(Google)——竞争心极强、跨领域深度。
- hardcore focused overdrive(极度专注过载型):Travis Kalanick(Uber)、Parker Conrad(Rippling)——单点极致、强度拉满。
"The best founders are usually those who are incredibly judicious with their time and say no to everything that doesn't align with their singular focus."" American Optimist(Joe Lonsdale),2024-11-03
"Usually when you have a big economic downturn, it's a series of cascading effects. It's almost like dominoes tipping each other over."" 20VC(Harry Stebbings),2020-05-26 [00:09:15]
"When cutting, you should cut more deeply than you think you should. Anyone who's marginal, you should default to cut versus keep."" 20VC(Harry Stebbings),2020-05-26 [00:24:07]
15. 关于 crypto 与 AI 的交叉、以及 tech-politics(Bankless 2024)
Bankless(2024-12,约 80 分钟 1:1)是他在 crypto-native 场合最完整的一次表达,补出三个新角度。
"Usually when I look at these sorts of technology shifts that are so important and so fundamental, I try to distill it down into use cases. What are the specific aspects of the technology that make it uniquely good for a specific application or use case, because otherwise nobody's going to use it?""
15.2 AI × crypto
"I think that's the origin of Near. Which is fascinating, right?... So I think there's long been an intersection of the people who are interested in AI and the people who are interested in crypto.""
"What if an AI is smart enough to start aggregating resources at scale and using those resources to manipulate society? And how do you prevent that? And crypto would be a good basis for that.""
15.3 tech-politics:2024-12
"If they're able to pull off what they're hoping to, then it is a truly once in a generation opportunity to affect massive change that can cascade through time in a positive way.""
"It felt to me like a lot of that activity was just another way to try and take control of the tech industry... It wasn't a, hey, we care about AI or understand it deeply, right?""
Braintrust(AI eval,a16z 领投 A 轮)的起点不是"决定孵化一家公司":
"Ankur Goyal came up with Brain Trust... I helped him really early get that up and running and did a lot of the early customer calls. Initially we talked about just doing that as like an open source project... and then it kind of converted into a company. So we were just doing it for fun, like a kind of a side project.""Ankur Goyal 想出了 Braintrust…… Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"Jared came out to kind of talk to different people about AI... We started just kind of comparing notes on what he'd been seeing from the corporate and government world in terms of people trying to adopt AI and not really knowing what to do. And I'd been talking to a lot of Fortune 100 CEOs and execs about sort of a similar thread.""Jared 出来找不同的人聊 AI…… Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"Normally, a startup doing B2B starts off with smaller businesses and then moves to mid-market before eventually landing multi-million dollar deals with big enterprises after three to seven years. We're thinking, let's just jump straight to those customers."" Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"There's three places you can implement it as an enterprise. You can buy something from a vendor... internal tooling... And then there's stuff that gets into your own product that you're offering externally to your customers. Those are sort of the three levels of AI for an enterprise."" Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"Often what you ask yourself for any new product is who are the tastemakers or who are the people who in general tend to adopt things more?"" 谁是那些通常更愿意先采用新东西的人?"Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"We decided to do the opposite of taking a lot of common stock and trying to control the company. We just put money in to buy ownership stakes, and the equity should really go to the employees and the founders and the people running it day-to-day."" Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
"For certain media, the headline is literally the opposite of reality... I don't think it's an accident over and over and over again. I think it's purposeful. I think it's really bad for society that people act this way."" Sourcery(Molly O'Shea),2025-10-20
PhD(MIT 遗传学,~2003 离开)→ operator(Plaxo, Google, Twitter, Color, 2003-2013+)→ angel investor(2007-2015)→ SPV operator-investor(2015-2020)→ Solo GP(2020-)→ multi-role(2023-:投资人 + Brain Co/Brinco/Braintrust 创始人 + No Priors 主持人 + 文明项目)。
- 2015 End of Cycle?:用 dot-com 数据类比,"smart toaster 仍然是 toaster"
- 2023 Early Days of AI:
- 2025 AI Market Clarity:GPT Ladder +
- 2026 Unicorn Market Cap 2026(年度数据系列):GenAI 已从 2023 年占 unicorn 总市值 2% 升至 22%;总市值 $4.4T→$5.8T(+33% YoY);地理上极端集中——"91% of global AI private market cap residing in a 1 hour radius"(91% 的全球 AI 私募市值坐落在湾区 1 小时车程半径内),湾区占全球 unicorn 市值 39%(上年 29%)、美国占 65%;同期新 unicorn 铸造率骤降(2022-2025 仅 ~300 家 vs 此前三年 900+)。
C:Three Ages of Compute 框架
- Daniel Gross:相邻 Solo GP,多次联合投资,AI Grant 共同评审;
- Nat Friedman:NFDG 共同投资人;
- Sarah Guo:No Priors
1. Solo GP
2. Color Health
Gil 同时是:(a) Cosmic Aleph 基金 GP;(b) Brain Co 联合创始人;(c) Brinco 联合创始人;(d) Braintrust 孵化人;(e) No Priors 主持人;(f) Color Health 董事;(g) Alexandria / Monumental / K-12 学校文明项目发起人。
