"He was this crazy inventor grandad. The type of person where – normally, you would go to the fridge of your grandparents and maybe take out an ice cream, right? When I would go, I still find ice cream. But what I would [also] find was a bunch of frozen bumblebees."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"I suddenly felt like, 'Poof! Life can be really short. Let's do something with it."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"My best take was, 'Maybe we'll find smart people very close to universities. And probably Belgium has been overlooked."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"I wanted to go to my LPs and be like, 'Look, look, look, we're almost company builders."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

  • 决策: 他选择推倒重来,而非修补: > "I remember thinking: 'What I need to do now is more than a 10% change. There's something entirely off. I need to turn up the volume a little bit and really question everything.'" > — Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

结果: > "I started to see the kind of founders I was looking for all my life." > — Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist 当被问"怎么做到"时: > "'Because I will.' Silence. Mutlu offered no more." > — The Generalist(转述 Demet Mutlu) 这种"无需解释的凶猛"正是他要找的信号。 至于为什么没投,2015 年他在伊斯坦布尔演讲的问答环节留下了当期的自我诊断(比 The Generalist 的 2026 年追述早了十年,且更不留情面):他承认自己当时还戴着"成熟生态系统的传统眼镜"——组合一半是连续创业者、常常是四十多岁的人——面对一个说要从 Harvard 退学的年轻人,第一反应是观望: > "I was also still looking at it certainly from a perspective of the outsider coming from a more mature ecosystem thinking, well, you know what? Wow, all that ambition. We'll see. We'll see in a few months... And so in that regard, we learned a few lessons. We were not on board in the case of Trendyol, but we tried to look at this region more in terms of raw talent." 这是个公道的质疑"——但坚持外来者视角本身是一种优势: > "I see it as a bit of a strength to be able to come also as an outsider, where we've noticed that people out here tend to be willing to go through a wall more than the comfort zone, which is called Europe." > — Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets" Q&A(2015)[视频#13]
[The Generalist #01], [Substack #03]

"We did something which is against all the rules for VCs, what VCs used to know as style drift: doing something entirely else, not proven."
Barend Van den Brande, Capital On Stage(2012)[

70 million people of which half are younger than 28... the number four country in the world for Facebook",并称土耳其是"我们在自家后院找到的'小中国'"("our own little China")。 [推断] 另有一处耐人寻味的措辞反差:2012 年他向创始人主动推销 hands-on 增值("talk to the CEOs we work with... to hear if and when we brought any of the hands-on added value that we promise"),而 2026 年 Wintercircus 的表述已是 "No performative value-add.

Sahin 的强度让 Barend 印象深刻: > "He had this intensity and clock speed which had us think he would swim across the Bosphorus every day if he needed to." > — Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist
[The Generalist #01], [Substack #03], [Flanders #04]

Powell 的远见(Firat 转述): > "He predicted things which still hold true. He said, 'Hacking will be a major issue, so we will be a security-first company. And regulation will be another issue so we will do our KYC properly and we will not be a cowboy exchange.'" > — Firat Ileri(谈 Jesse Powell),The Generalist

Deliveroo、Showpad

"They are unconventional and have been terrific. The questions were really different than everyone else."
Will Shu(Deliveroo 创始人),Financial Times(2026-03)[#12]
"We initially aimed for EUR 150 million, but after ten days, we already had pledges of EUR 180 million."
Barend Van den Brande, Flanders Investment & Trade (2020)

"For the moment, Firat is really the man in charge."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"legendary innovators and entrepreneurs realize in less than a decade what organizations would not accomplish in generations."
Magnificent Grants(Barend
2025 年,Barend 与 Firat 一同入选 Forbes Midas List(2025 年 12 月的 Midas List Europe,Barend 首次上榜即列第 13 位)[#11][#12]。
"The kind of founders we look into are truly misfits. They are anomalies… we want them to be unreasonable."
Barend Van den Brande, Financial Times(2026-03)[#12]

"For Van den Brande's firm, the founder is not merely important; they are the only thing that matters."
The Generalist(概括 Hummingbird 立场)
"We put 80% on the founder."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"I said to my own LPs, 'Listen guys, we've got to do a confession.' Now, a confession implies sin... I told them, 'Listen, I know this sounds like a bit like of an iffy or a shaky type of exercise. But the only way to do that is to put 80% on the founder. And you know what? I'm taking all of your money here, and for the last two years, we've been leaning in a direction which is super uncomfortable."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"You would find somebody like Brad Feld or Fred Wilson go out and talk about obsession for product, but usually that's where it ends. They stay a bit vague... we're spending a lot of time with entrepreneurs, not talking about the thing that I think matters for 50 to 60 to 70% of what a successful company is, which is the basic founding team."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)[

"All of the best people, in our opinion, have gone through a level of trauma. Where at some point life shows up and it's not just all Tom and Jerry and cartoons. And it shows its teeth."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"Just in the Hummingbird team, we have three people with dyslexia out of ten."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"Try things, look at the market, not go for perfection from day one."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)

"When I was working in the United States, I noticed that in general people in the United States are not particularly much smarter. Why would they be? But... they tend to go out with something that is imperfect, but take that feedback from the market and then see it as an iterative process."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)

"What we like to see is people who have the ability to understand that while you're playing chess, the edges are growing at the chessboard and the rules are even changing."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)
"what we were looking for in the few exceptional entrepreneurs that we hope to identify is this quality of being at the same time a control freak and being a visionary."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)

"We're not really looking for people who step in as macho leaders or generals and pretend to be leaders... We're looking for people where some level of balanced ego is there. Enough ego to go out there and to withstand the pressure from the wrong investors, the wrong people."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)

"In general people would come back and say, dear Barend, we really enjoyed meeting you, but we're afraid you really are operating in a crowded market... but most of the cases there's a good chance that somehow we think that you're good, you're really good, but maybe you're not the exceptional guy that we think is going to make that difference."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)[

"It's easy to lower the bar. We've done that before as an investor as well... we see all that goodwill, this energy, the passion, and you want to see it happen. And then we invest thinking, you know what, maybe we'll have some other guy in our network we can bring to the team and we'll fix that one thing. And in hindsight, well, we've made many mistakes in doing so. It's not that easy to fix."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)[

Forrest Gump

"The way I did it was like, 'Hey, listen, I'm a bit of a combination of Dr. House and Forrest Gump. I can't help it, but I need to know a couple of weird questions.' In a way, you're creating a vulnerable space."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"I said, sir, when is the last time you threw a piece of furniture at your colleague? And so the guy turned all red. He felt that he was caught. And he at that point admitted, he said, you know what, last week I threw my chair. How did you know? Of course, I didn't."
Barend Van den Brande, "VC Secrets"(2015)[

"We're all in this room very data-driven, focused on CAC over LTV and cohorts and retention. But some of the hardest part of building a business is dealing with the soft, the intangible."
Barend Van den Brande, Capital On Stage(2016)
"most of the time we fail entirely on analysis but we think it's our job to actually go there, show a level of vulnerability and together try to see if we could build the team."
Barend Van den Brande, Capital On Stage(2016)

"We've done ~20 investments over 5 years, rather than the usual 20 investments per year."
Barend Van den Brande, TechCrunch (2017)

"Now, we see a normal byproduct of any legendary, generational outcome as two, three near-death moments. When such moments arise, Hummingbird sees it as an opportunity."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist
"I would argue half of our returns are just the double-down. Half of it is the pick, and half of it is the double-down."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"We find it amazing how LPs find it plausible that Vertical or industry-specific VCs have a strong edge over Generalist VCs."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"Overly stereotypical by way of making a juicy argument: we would hold that platform teams are first and foremost VC marketing, designed to win over entrepreneurs and LPs."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"The good ones won't [take your advice]. The good founders don't need much help."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"We do believe that it's founders who build great companies and this idea of bringing lots of CEOs and so-called professional managers is not what we saw to be the recipe for success."
Barend Van den Brande, Capital On Stage(2016)

"I'm very worried about narratives. I'll share with you a number of narratives; I just worry that they are narratives. And before you know it, if you have enough of these narratives, you become a cartoon, you become a cliché."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"VC has this weird tension. Everything in a startup needs to happen now. But at the same time, as a VC, you put a pawn on the chessboard... I always felt it kept me sane."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"The hunger is not to the point it was ten or fifteen years ago when it was dead or alive, and feeling that I needed to almost in a Japanese warrior type of style ritually kill myself for not completing something."
Barend Van den Brande, The Generalist

"We want to stay true to ourselves. Our heart is in early stage investments: It's what we do best."
Barend Van den Brande, TechCrunch (2017)

  1. YouTube — "VC Secrets: What do VCs look for in a super entrepreneur?"
