Alan Mathison Turing(1912-06-23 生于伦敦,1954-06-07 死于氰化物中毒,验尸裁定自杀,终年 41 岁)——数学家、逻辑学家、计算机科学与人工智能的奠基人。
"We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", Mind, 1950(全文最后一句)
"I feel sure that I shall meet Morcom again somewhere and that there will be some work for us to do together."" 致母亲信,1930-02(转写异文:"I feel that I shall meet...",并接 "as there was for us to do here")
"It never seems to have occurred to me to make other friends besides Morcom, he made everyone else seem so ordinary.""
"It used to be supposed in Science that if everything was known about the Universe at any particular moment then we can predict what it will be through all the future."" Nature of Spirit", c.1932
"More modern science however has come to the conclusion that when we are dealing with atoms and electrons we are quite unable to know the exact state of them; our instruments being made of atoms and electrons themselves.""
"We have a will which is able to determine the action of the atoms probably in a small portion of the brain, or possibly all over it.""
"As regards the question of why we have bodies at all; why we do not or cannot live free as spirits and communicate as such, we probably could do so but there would be nothing whatever to do. The body provides something for the spirit to look after and use.""
"It reminds us that Chris is in some way alive now. One is perhaps too inclined to think only of him alive at some future time when we shall meet him again; but it is really so much more helpful to think of him as just separated from us for the present.""
1936 年 5 月 28 日,《On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem》投稿伦敦数学会——这篇解决希尔伯特判定问题的论文,顺手发明了现代计算机的数学模型。
"The 'computable' numbers may be described briefly as the real numbers whose expressions as a decimal are calculable by finite means."" On Computable Numbers", 1936
"According to my definition, a number is computable if its decimal can be written down by a machine.""
"No real attempt will be made to justify the definitions given until we reach § 9. For the present I shall only say that the justification lies in the fact that the human memory is necessarily limited."" On Computable Numbers", 1936
"We may compare a man in the process of computing a real number to a machine which is only capable of a finite number of conditions.""
"Computing is normally done by writing certain symbols on paper. We may suppose this paper is divided into squares like a child's arithmetic book.""
"The differences from our point of view between the single and compound symbols is that the compound symbols, if they are too lengthy, cannot be observed at one glance. This is in accordance with experience. We cannot tell at a glance whether 9999999999999999 and 999999999999999 are the same.""
"The behaviour of the computer at any moment is determined by the symbols which he is observing, and his 'state of mind' at that moment.""
"One of my conclusions was that the idea of a 'rule of thumb' process and a 'machine process' were synonymous."" Lecture to the London Mathematical Society, 1947-02-20
"I don't think I really do know much about jobs, except the one I had during the war, and that certainly did not involve any travelling. ... It certainly involved a good deal of hard thinking, but whether you'd be interested I don't know.""
Secret and Confidential / Prime Minister only",自陈越级理由,自担全部责任。
ACTION THIS DAY. Make sure they have all they want on extreme priority."(批示为丘吉尔的话,仅作结果记录。)
"Our reason for writing to you direct is that for months we have done everything that we possibly can through the normal channels, and that we despair of any early improvement without your intervention.""
"The trouble to our mind is that as we are a very small section with numerically trivial requirements it is very difficult to bring home to the authorities finally responsible either the importance of what is done here or the urgent necessity of dealing promptly with our requests.""
"The effect of this is that the finding of the naval keys is being delayed at least twelve hours every day. In order to enable him to start night shifts again Freeborn needs immediately about twenty more untrained Grade III women clerks.""
"We have written this letter entirely on our own initiative. We do not know who or what is responsible for our difficulties.""
"There is a remarkably close parallel between the problems of the physicist and those of the cryptographer. The system on which a message is enciphered corresponds to the laws of the universe, the intercepted messages to the evidence available, the keys for a day or a message to important constants which have to be determined."" Intelligent Machinery", 1948(他公开文字中最接近战时经验的一段)
"There are indications however that it is possible to make the machine display intelligence at the risk of its making occasional serious mistakes. By following up this aspect the machine could probably be made to play very good chess.""
"I believe that the provision of proper storage is the key to the problem of the digital computer, and certainly if they are to be persuaded to show any sort of genuine intelligence much larger capacities than are yet available must be provided. In my opinion this problem of making a large memory available at reasonably short notice is much more important than that of doing operations such as multiplication at high speed.""
"This will not necessitate everyone interested in such work having an electronic computer. It would be quite possible to arrange to control a distant computer by means of a telephone line.""
"It would be like a pupil who had learnt much from his master, but had added much more by his own work. When this happens I feel that one is obliged to regard the machine as showing intelligence.""
"I propose to investigate the question as to whether it is possible for machinery to show intelligent behaviour. It is usually assumed without argument that it is not possible."" Intelligent Machinery", 1948
"If we are trying to produce an intelligent machine, and are following the human model as closely as we can, we should begin with a machine with very little capacity ... Then by applying appropriate interference, mimicking education, we should hope to modify the machine until it could be relied on to produce definite reactions to certain commands."" Intelligent Machinery", 1948
"All of this suggests that the cortex of the infant is an unorganized machine, which can be organized by suitable interfering training.""
"The training of the human child depends largely on a system of rewards and punishments, and this suggests that it ought to be possible to carry through the organizing with only two interfering inputs, one for 'pleasure' or 'reward' (R) and the other for 'pain' or punishment' (P).""
"I have investigated a particular type of pleasure-pain system, which I will now describe.""
"I propose to consider the question, 'Can machines think?' This should begin with definitions of the meaning of the terms 'machine' and 'think.' The definitions might be framed so as to reflect so far as possible the normal use of the words, but this attitude is dangerous."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950(全文第一段)
"If the meaning of the words 'machine' and 'think' are to be found by examining how they are commonly used it is difficult to escape the conclusion that the meaning and the answer to the question, 'Can machines think?' is to be sought in a statistical survey such as a Gallup poll. But this is absurd.""
1952 年 1 月,他与 Max Newman、脑外科医生 Geoffrey Jefferson、哲学家 Richard Braithwaite 录制 BBC 四人圆桌《Can Automatic Calculating Machines Be Said To Think?》——已知最早的 AI 广播圆桌(录音均被 BBC 销毁,仅存讲稿;下文引語均出自讲稿/转录)。
"I've now got myself into the kind of trouble that I have always considered to be quite a possibility for me, though I have usually rated it at about 10:1 against. I shall shortly be pleading guilty to a charge of sexual offences with a young man.""
"The story of how it all came to be found out is a long and fascinating one, which I shall have to make into a short story one day, but haven't the time to tell you now. No doubt I shall emerge from it all a different man, but quite who I've not found out.""
"I'm afraid that the following syllogism may be used by some in the future. Turing believes machines think Turing lies with men Therefore machines do not think""恐怕将来有人会使用下面这个三段论: Turing 相信机器思考 Turing 与男人同眠 所以机器不思考"同上(落款 "Yours in distress, Alan"——"你苦恼的 Alan")
"I would not like the journey, and I detest America.""
3 月,他给学生兼挚友 Robin Gandy 寄出四张总题为 "Messages from the Unseen World" 的明信片,其中一张写着:
"III. The Universe is the interior of the Light Cone of the Creation IV. Science is a Differential Equation. Religion is a Boundary Condition.""
"The results which have been described in this article are mainly of a negative character, setting certain bounds to what we can hope to achieve purely by reasoning. These, and some other results of mathematical logic may be regarded as going some way towards a demonstration, within mathematics itself, of the inadequacy of 'reason' unsupported by common sense."" Solvable and Unsolvable Problems", 1954-02
"I don't want to give a definition of thinking, but if I had to I should probably be unable to say anything more about it than that it was a sort of buzzing that went on inside my head. But I don't really see that we need to agree on a definition at all."" BBC 圆桌 "Can Automatic Calculating Machines Be Said To Think?", 1952-01
"To take an extreme case, we are not interested in the fact that the brain has the consistency of cold porridge. We don't want to say 'This machine's quite hard, so it isn't a brain, and so it can't think.""
"Well, that's my test. Of course I am not saying at present either that machines really could pass the test, or that they couldn't. My suggestion is just that this is the question we should discuss.""
"We do not wish to penalise the machine for its inability to shine in beauty competitions, nor to penalise a man for losing in a race against an aeroplane. The conditions of our game make these disabilities irrelevant."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"May not machines carry out something which ought to be described as thinking but which is very different from what a man does? This objection is a very strong one, but at least we can say that if, nevertheless, a machine can be constructed to play the imitation game satisfactorily, we need not be troubled by this objection.""
"I shall give most attention to the view which I hold myself, that it is not altogether unreasonable to describe digital computers as brains."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951-05-15
"My contention is that machines can be constructed which will simulate the behaviour of the human mind very closely. They will make mistakes at times, and at times they may make new and very interesting statements, and on the whole the output of them will be worth attention to the same sort of extent as the output of a human mind."" Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical Theory", c.1951
"As soon as one can see the cause and effect working themselves out in the brain, one regards it as not being thinking, but a sort of unimaginative donkey-work. From this point of view one might be tempted to define thinking as consisting of 'those mental processes that we don't understand'.""
"If this is right then to make a thinking machine is to make one which does interesting things without our really understanding quite how it is done.""
"I believe that in about fifty years' time it will be possible to programme computers, with a storage capacity of about 10^9, to make them play the imitation game so well that an average interrogator will not have more than 70 per cent chance of making the right identification after five minutes of questioning."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"The original question, 'Can machines think?' I believe to be too meaningless to deserve discussion. Nevertheless I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted.""
"Oh yes, at least 100 years, I should say.""
"If a machine can think, it might think more intelligently than we do, and then where should we be? Even if we could keep the machines in a subservient position, for instance by turning off the power at strategic moments, we should, as a species, feel greatly humbled."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951-05-15
"But this new danger is much closer. If it comes at all it will almost certainly be within the next millenium. It is remote but not astronomically remote, and is certainly something which can give us anxiety.""
"It is probable though that the intellectuals would be mistaken about this. There would be plenty to do, [trying to understand what the machines were trying to say,] i.e. in trying to keep one's intelligence up to the standard set by the machines, for it seems probable that once the machine thinking method had started, it would not take long to outstrip our feeble powers."" Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical Theory", c.1951(方括号句为原打字稿手写边注)
"There would be no question of the machines dying, and they would be able to converse with each other to sharpen their wits. At some stage therefore we should have to expect the machines to take control, in the way that is mentioned in Samuel Butler's 'Erewhon'.""
"This only represents my opinion; there is plenty of room for others."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951-05-15
"It is customary, in a talk or article on this subject, to offer a grain of comfort, in the form of a statement that some particularly human characteristic could never be imitated by a machine. ... I cannot offer any such comfort, for I believe that no such bounds can be set.""
"An unwillingness to admit the possibility that mankind can have any rivals in intellectual power. This occurs as much amongst intellectual people as amongst others: they have more to lose."" Intelligent Machinery", 1948
"A religious belief that any attempt to construct such machines is a sort of Promethean irreverence.""
"The objections (a) and (b), being purely emotional, do not really need to be refuted. If one feels it necessary to refute them there is little to be said that could hope to prevail, though the actual production of the machines would probably have some effect.""
"I am unable to accept any part of this, but will attempt to reply in theological terms."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"In attempting to construct such machines we should not be irreverently usurping His power of creating souls, any more than we are in the procreation of children: rather we are, in either case, instruments of His will providing mansions for the souls that He creates.""
"However, this is mere speculation. I am not very impressed with theological arguments whatever they may be used to support. Such arguments have often been found unsatisfactory in the past. In the time of Galileo it was argued that the texts, 'And the sun stood still ...' (Joshua x. 13) ... were an adequate refutation of the Copernican theory.""
"I do not think that this argument is sufficiently substantial to require refutation. Consolation would be more appropriate: perhaps this should be sought in the transmigration of souls.""
"According to the most extreme form of this view the only way by which one could be sure that machine thinks is to be the machine and to feel oneself thinking. ... Likewise according to this view the only way to know that a man thinks is to be that particular man. It is in fact the solipsist point of view. ... Instead of arguing continually over this point it is usual to have the polite convention that everyone thinks.""
"I do not wish to give the impression that I think there is no mystery about consciousness. There is, for instance, something of a paradox connected with any attempt to localise it. But I do not think these mysteries necessarily need to be solved before we can answer the question with which we are concerned in this paper.""
"I believe they are mostly founded on the principle of scientific induction. A man has seen thousands of machines in his lifetime. From what he sees of them he draws a number of general conclusions. They are ugly, each is designed for a very limited purpose, ... Naturally he concludes that these are necessary properties of machines in general.""
"Otherwise we may (as most English children do) decide that everybody speaks English, and that it is silly to learn French.""
"Machines take me by surprise with great frequency. This is largely because I do not do sufficient calculation to decide what to expect them to do, or rather because, although I do a calculation, I do it in a hurried, slipshod fashion, taking risks.""
"The view that machines cannot give rise to surprises is due, I believe, to a fallacy to which philosophers and mathematicians are particularly subject. This is the assumption that as soon as a fact is presented to a mind all consequences of that fact spring into the mind simultaneously with it. It is a very useful assumption under many circumstances, but one too easily forgets that it is false.""
"One does not need to be able to understand how these orders lead to the machine's subsequent behaviour, any more than one needs to understand the mechanism of germination when one puts a seed in the ground. The plant comes up whether one understands or not."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951
"If we give the machine a program which results in its doing something interesting which we had not anticipated I should be inclined to say that the machine had originated something, rather than to claim that its behaviour was implicit in the programme, and therefore that the originality lies entirely with us.""
"Against it I would say that fair play must be given to the machine. Instead of it sometimes giving no answer we could arrange that it gives occasional wrong answers. But the human mathematician would likewise make blunders when trying out new techniques.""
"In other words then, if a machine is expected to be infallible, it cannot also be intelligent. There are several mathematical theorems which say almost exactly that.""
"We too often give wrong answers to questions ourselves to be justified in being very pleased at such evidence of fallibility on the part of the machines. ... In short, then, there might be men cleverer than any given machine, but then again there might be other machines cleverer again, and so on."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"This statement should I think be compared with another of rather similar form. 'No animal can swallow an animal heavier than himself.' Both statements are, so far as I know, untrue."" Chess"(收录于 Faster Than Thought),1953
"They are also both of a kind that one is rather easily bluffed into accepting, partly because one thinks that there ought to be some rather slick way of demonstrating them, and one does not like to admit that one does not see what this argument is.""
"The reader will have anticipated that I have no very convincing arguments of a positive nature to support my views. If I had I should not have taken such pains to point out the fallacies in contrary views."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"These last two paragraphs do not claim to be convincing arguments. They should rather be described as 'recitations tending to produce belief.""
4. Learning machines:child machine、
"At my present rate of working I produce about a thousand digits of programme a day, so that about sixty workers, working steadily through the fifty years might accomplish the job, if nothing went into the waste-paper basket. Some more expeditious method seems desirable."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"Instead of trying to produce a programme to simulate the adult mind, why not rather try to produce one which simulates the child's? If this were then subjected to an appropriate course of education one would obtain the adult brain. Presumably the child brain is something like a notebook as one buys it from the stationer's. Rather little mechanism, and lots of blank sheets.""
"We cannot expect to find a good child machine at the first attempt. One must experiment with teaching one such machine and see how well it learns. ... There is an obvious connection between this process and evolution, by the identifications: Structure of the child machine = hereditary material; Changes of the child machine = mutation; Natural selection = judgment of the experimenter.""
"One may hope, however, that this process will be more expeditious than evolution. The survival of the fittest is a slow method for measuring advantages. The experimenter, by the exercise of intelligence, should be able to speed it up.""
"The machine has to be so constructed that events which shortly preceded the occurrence of a punishment signal are unlikely to be repeated, whereas a reward signal increased the probability of repetition of the events which led up to it. These definitions do not presuppose any feelings on the part of the machine. I have done some experiments with one such child machine, and succeeded in teaching it a few things, but the teaching method was too unorthodox for the experiment to be considered really successful.""
"Well, I suppose we both were. One will have to find out how to make machines that will learn more quickly if there is to be any real success.""
"One hopes too that there will be a sort of snowball effect. The more things the machine has learnt the easier it ought to be for it to learn others. In learning to do any particular thing it will probably also be learning to learn more efficiently.""
"I am inclined to believe that when one has taught it to do certain things one will find that some other things which one had planned to teach it are happening without any special teaching being required. This certainly happens with an intelligent human mind, and if it doesn't happen when one is teaching a machine there is something lacking in the machine.""
"It may be used to help in making up its own programmes, or to predict the effect of alterations in its own structure. By observing the results of its own behaviour it can modify its own programmes so as to achieve some purpose more effectively. These are possibilities of the near future, rather than Utopian dreams."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"It would be quite easy to arrange the experiences in such a way that they automatically caused the structure of the machine to build up into a previously intended form, and this would obviously be a gross form of cheating, almost on a par with having a man inside the machine."" Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical Theory", c.1951
"I suggest that the education of the machine should be entrusted to some highly competent schoolmaster who is interested in the project but who is forbidden any detailed knowledge of the inner workings of the machine.""
"The mechanic who has constructed the machine, however, is permitted to keep the machine in running order, and if he suspects that the machine has been operating incorrectly may put it back to one of its previous positions and ask the schoolmaster to repeat his lessons from that point on.""
"At comparatively late stages of education the memory might be extended to include important parts of the configuration of the machine at each moment, or in other words it would begin to remember what its thoughts had been.""
"At a very late stage of education the whole question of procedure in such cases will probably have been investigated by the machine itself, by means of some kind of index, and this may result in some highly sophisticated, and, one hopes, highly satisfactory, form of rule.""
"An important feature of a learning machine is that its teacher will often be very largely ignorant of quite what is going on inside, although he may still be able to some extent to predict his pupil's behaviour."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"We must not always expect to know what the computer is going to do. We should be pleased when the machine surprises us, in rather the same way as one is pleased when a pupil does something which he had not been explicitly taught to do."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951
"Intelligent behaviour presumably consists in a departure from the completely disciplined behaviour involved in computation, but a rather slight one, which does not give rise to random behaviour, or to pointless repetitive loops."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"To convert a brain or machine into a universal machine is the extremest form of discipline. ... But discipline is certainly not enough in itself to produce intelligence. That which is required in addition we call initiative."" Intelligent Machinery", 1948
"Many people think that a very abstract activity, like the playing of chess, would be best. It can also be maintained that it is best to provide the machine with the best sense organs that money can buy, and then teach it to understand and speak English. ... Again I do not know what the right answer is, but I think both approaches should be tried."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"This special property of digital computers, that they can mimic any discrete-state machine, is described by saying that they are universal machines. The existence of machines with this property has the important consequence that, considerations of speed apart, it is unnecessary to design various new machines to do various computing processes. They can all be done with one digital computer, suitably programmed for each case."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"A digital computer is a universal machine in the sense that it can be made to replace any machine of a certain very wide class. It will not replace a bulldozer or a steam-engine or a telescope, but it will replace any rival design of calculating machine."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951
"I should also say that 'If any machine can appropriately be described as a brain, then any digital computer can be so described'.""
"Importance is often attached to the fact that modern digital computers are electrical, and that the nervous system also is electrical. Since Babbage's machine was not electrical, and since all digital computers are in a sense equivalent, we see that this use of electricity cannot be of theoretical importance. ... If we wish to find such similarities we should look rather for mathematical analogies of function."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"It is to be expected therefore that large scale hand-computing will die out. Computers will still be employed on small calculations ... but whenever a single calculation may be expected to take a human computer days of work, it will presumably be done by an electronic computer instead.""
"Roughly speaking those who work in connection with the ACE will be divided into its masters and its servants. Its masters will plan out instruction tables for it, thinking up deeper and deeper ways of using it. Its servants will feed it with cards as it calls for them.""
"As time goes on the calculator itself will take over the functions both of masters and of servants. The servants will be replaced by mechanical and electrical limbs and sense organs. ... The masters are liable to get replaced because as soon as any technique becomes at all stereotyped it becomes possible to devise a system of instruction tables which will enable the electronic computer to do it for itself.""
"It may happen however that the masters will refuse to do this. They may be unwilling to let their jobs be stolen from them in this way. In that case they would surround the whole of their work with mystery and make excuses, couched in well chosen gibberish, whenever any dangerous suggestions were made. I think that a reaction of this kind is a very real danger.""
"The machine interprets whatever it is told in a quite definite manner without any sense of humour or sense of proportion. Unless in communicating with it one says exactly what one means, trouble is bound to result.""
"I certainly hope and believe that no great efforts will be put into making machines with the most distinctively human, but non-intellectual characteristics such as the shape of the human body. It appears to me to be quite futile to make such attempts and their results would have something like the unpleasant quality of artificial flowers."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951
"It may be that the feeling of free will which we all have is an illusion. Or it may be that we really have got free will, but that there is no way of telling from our behaviour that this is so."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951
"It is certain that a machine which is to imitate a brain must appear to behave as if it had free will, and it may well be asked how this is to be achieved. One possibility is to make its behaviour depend on something like a roulette wheel or a supply of radium.""
"Sometimes such a machine is described as having free will (though I would not use this phrase myself)."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"To vi) I should say 'I shall never know, any more than I shall ever be quite certain that you feel as I do."" Chess"(Faster Than Thought),1953
"The system of the 'universe as a whole' is such that quite small errors in the initial conditions can have an overwhelming effect at a later time. The displacement of a single electron by a billionth of a centimetre at one moment might make the difference between a man being killed by an avalanche a year later, or escaping."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"These disturbing phenomena seem to deny all our usual scientific ideas. How we should like to discredit them! Unfortunately the statistical evidence, at least for telepathy, is overwhelming.""
"Science is a Differential Equation. Religion is a Boundary Condition.""
"The popular view that scientists proceed inexorably from well-established fact to well-established fact, never being influenced by any improved conjecture, is quite mistaken. Provided it is made clear which are proved facts and which are conjectures, no harm can result. Conjectures are of great importance since they suggest useful lines of research."" Computing Machinery and Intelligence", 1950
"I believe that this danger of the mathematician making mistakes is an unavoidable corollary of his power of sometimes hitting upon an entirely new method. This seems to be confirmed by the well known fact that the most reliable people will not usually hit upon really new methods."" Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical Theory", c.1951
"Mathematical reasoning may be regarded rather schematically as the exercise of a combination of two faculties, which we may call intuition and ingenuity. The activity of the intuition consists in making spontaneous judgments which are not the result of conscious trains of reasoning. These judgments are often but by no means invariably correct."" Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals", 1939
"We have been trying to see how far it is possible to eliminate intuition, and leave only ingenuity. We do not mind how much ingenuity is required, and therefore assume it to be available in unlimited supply.""
"In this way ingenuity is replaced by patience.""
"We are leaving out of account that most important faculty which distinguishes topics of interest from others; in fact, we are regarding the function of the mathematician as simply to determine the truth or falsity of propositions.""
"One imagines different machines allowing different sets of proofs, and by choosing a suitable machine one can approximate 'truth' by 'provability' better than with a less suitable machine, and can in a sense approximate it as well as you please. The choice of a proof checking machine involves intuition.""
"The isolated man does not develop any intellectual power. It is necessary for him to be immersed in an environment of other men, whose techniques he absorbs during the first twenty years of his life. He may then perhaps do a little research of his own and make a very few discoveries which are passed on to other men."" Intelligent Machinery", 1948
"From this point of view the search for new techniques must be regarded as carried out by the human community as a whole, rather than by individuals.""
"This model will be a simplification and an idealization, and consequently a falsification. It is to be hoped that the features retained for discussion are those of greatest importance in the present state of knowledge."" The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis", 1952
"The full understanding of the paper requires a good knowledge of mathematics, some biology, and some elementary chemistry. Since readers cannot be expected to be experts in all of these subjects, a number of elementary facts are explained, which can be found in text-books.""
"The statement is moreover one which one does not attempt to prove. Propaganda is more appropriate to it than proof, for its status is something between a theorem and a definition."" Solvable and Unsolvable Problems", 1954
"The fact is that we know very little about it, and very little research has yet been done. There are plentiful ideas, but we do not yet know which of them are of importance. As in the detective stories, at the beginning of the investigation any trifle may be of importance to the investigator. ... But at present we have nothing worth putting before a jury."" BBC "Can Digital Computers Think?", 1951
"If I were to sum up the weakness of the above system in a few words I would describe it as a caricature of my own play. It was in fact based on an introspective analysis of my thought processes when playing, with considerable simplifications. It makes oversights which are very similar to those which I make myself."" Chess"(Faster Than Thought),1953
"The results which have been found are on the whole ones which have fallen into our laps rather than ones which have positively been searched for."" Solvable and Unsolvable Problems", 1954

- ~~"Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine."~~ — 2014 年电影《The Imitation Game》台词(编剧 Graham Moore),非 Turing 的话。
- ~~"Those who can imagine anything, can create the impossible."~~ —
- ~~"A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human."~~ —
- "I am building a brain" / "All I'm after is just a mediocre brain"(1943 Bell Labs
- 反向提醒:易被疑为伪托的 "cold porridge"(冷粥)、"a sort of buzzing"(嗡嗡声)、"Yours in distress" 三段论、"machines to take control" 均为真——分别见 1952 圆桌转录、Routledge 信、'51 Society 讲稿。
